A parent of a severely food allergic child who is a member of another support group to which I belong has created a website to track major food allergy legislation.

It can be found at http://www.shamrockbay.com/FA/FoodAllergenProtection.shtml and I think it's an efficient way to stay in tune with legislative activity. One of the really interesting aspects of the site is the tracking of levels of support for the various bills, and the ability to send him updates based on positions taken by legislators based on our advocacy.

FYI - I have obtained permission from the owner of the site to post the link here.

Check out this link...on the bottom of the page, there is a button to click on, it says "Show your concern". This brings you to a page where a letter is already written, regarding support of the Food Allergen Protection Act. Type in your name, email, state and zip, and it automatically sends a copy to your Senators and Congressmen!

On December 8th, the Food Allergen Labeling and Consumer Protection Act (H.R. 3684) was introduced into Congress. This bill mandates labeling of allergens contained in packaged foods, and requires that the CDC collect data on the predominance of food allergies in America. Note that there is a companion bill in the Senate as well, S.741, but the FALCPA is listed as Title II of this bill, the official name of which is the Minor Use Minor Species Animal Health Act. There is more information on it here:

My web site has more information on the
legislation and details of how to contact your Senators and Representatives.

If you contact your representatives and ask for support for these bills it would be of benefit to everyone that deals with food allergies.
Feel free to forward this information to anyone you feel would find it useful.

Re-raising to remind folks to please update Jim with results on contacting legislators.
Congress re-convenes on 1/20, so now is the time to alert legislators about these bills and line up their support. The food lobby will continue to fight hard to stick w/voluntary guidelines (and that clearly doesn't get the job done).
