We Flew SW

We used SowthWest Airlines this month and they were Great about our son's PA. When I booked the tickets they flagged our reservation and we were told to check in at least an hour before our flight so we could get the PA Dust form. On the way to orlando they served a breakfast bar, which didn't mention anything about Peanuts or Tree Nuts in the ingredients, my son was sleeping so he didn't have any of it. On the way back to Philly they served Plane Cookies, he ate them and was fine, he really liked them. I forgot about the preboarding on the way to orlando so we were the last ones to board but on the way back we preboarded which was Great because the filght was full again.
I diffently would recommend SW and the flights were not dirty at all, I know some people had mentioned that the planes were dirty from previous flights. We took the first flight leaving to Orlando and the 3rd flight coming home.

This is the problem with Southwest---the experience is totally variable. I also had our reservationist "flag" DD's due to peanut/tree nut allergy and I called again 1 month before, 2 weeks before, and 1 week before. Each phone call, I was assured they would accommodate our travel. The flight down was great (Manchester to Orlando)--no problem, it was an early morning flight. The flight home was a totally different story with several of us families having to get off the plane and rebook for the next morning (hotel, another rental car at our expense and luggage already checked). The plane was filthy---littered with peanuts. The ticket agent and flight attendants were making fun of peanut allergies, rolling their eyes---completely rude. Our choice was to get off the plane "if" we "really" thought it was unsafe. We got off and so did 3 other families. The other families said they had called beforehand, as well, to inform SW of their children's life threatening peanut allergies. We were rebooked on another airline and will never fly SW with our DD again---I don't care how cheap or convenient their flights are.
I'm glad you had a good experience, but wanted others to know the experiences vary greatly on SW.
Edited to add: Oh, the "peanut-free snack" from SW on our flight down to Orlando included Ritz Bits Cheese crackers with peanut as an ingredient. I always feed DD our food when we travel anyway, but I thought it was ironic that they announced they were serving a peanut-free snack---and it definitely contained peanut---not a "may contain".

I'm so glad you had a great experience! Though, I've read too many mixed reports to give Southwest a shot. We stick with Airtran and USAirways when flying to Orlando. I've flown Southwest without the kids--- peanuts everywhere. Just out of my comfort zone. I actually booked Southwest for our first trip (I didn't know they served peanuts)--- I read about the peanuts a few days later, called them, and they gave me my non-refundable money right back--- they told me we shouldn't fly with them as their planes even smell of peanut. I was surprised they gave me my money back like that.

My wife and I just arrived from Philly to Orlando. My son has a less severe peanut allergy. The flight started really well. They alerted people that there was a passenger on board with a peanut allergy (I thought we were in good shape).
They passed around two items, a Nabisco Ritz product (with no mention of peanut allergins on the package) and pretzles (manufactured by a nut company). CLEARLY marked on the back was a line stating that the pretzles may be contaminatated. My wife told the FA that my son could not eat it to which she replied "this is the substitute I always use for peanut allergies." Thank god my wife reads the labels.
Then people around me started eating food, including products with peanuts they brought on the plane. They started talking to each other and the grandmother told the daughter (probably in her late 20s) to be careful since there are children on the plane with the peanut allergies. The 20 year old says "that's not my problem" to which my wife jumps in and says, "well it's mine, my son could DIE if he's exposed to those." I was so proud of my wife for doing so - and so angry and the ignorance level of these people.
I haven't read all of the posts on this site (just found it actually), but I hope SW and other airlines take this more seriously before a child really is injured. They make accommodations for less serious issues, it's time for people to start treating this with the attention it deserves.

I am shocked by some of these experiences. I fly quite a bit with my PA daughter and the airlines Air Tran and Southwest have been quite accomodating. I really don't give them a choice. I ask them to announce that this flight must be peanut free- and that those people with peanut snacks please refrain from eating them. When people hear that it is a child they have been very nice about it. I have informed the airline staff that if she starts to have a reaction in the air they will have to land the plane so I think people will be happy to comply rather than face that kind of delay. I have found many nuts on the ground and seats though. It is probably much better to just take the nut-free airlines, but how do we control what people bring on?

You can't control what other passengers bring on, but many folks here will request to be re-seated if another passenger whips out PB product or bag of pnuts -- sometimes it's as simple as asking the other passenger to put the food away & explain why. Also, some airlines will make announcement as to PA child on board & request that all passengers refrain from eating pnut or treenut items for safety. (This will vary even within a particular airline -- depends on the attitude of the flight crew or CSR at the gate.)
