I received this in an email:

We have a very exciting opportunity to put food allergies at the forefront of news.. Jane Pauley of NBC is going to do a full show on food allergies -- specifically, what are food allergies, why are they increasing, what is it like for children who have food allergies, and their families and communities. Several families will be interviewed as will a prominent pediatric food allergist. We have been asked to forward the attached email to families, support group leaders, and others who will help get the word out that: (1) individuals and families with food allergies are welcome to be audience members on Friday, October 15, 2004 - taping will start at 11:30, but you must arrive by 10:30am and (2) if you have a child between 8-13 years of age, please contact them if you are interested in you and your child being interviewed. We need your help to make certain this show is a success. Please continue to pass this on... and if you have any questions, please do not hesitate to contact me or Nyja Greene at NBC - she may be reached at 212-664-5325. Thanks so much! I emailed Ms. Greene. I'll let you know what she says, and if we go to the show.

Naturemom, Did you email the show at the above link or did you have Ms. Greens's personal email address? I emailed the show at the "tell us your story" area. I hope to hear from her as well. We live in Charleston, SC so I don't think that we will be able to show up for the studio audience. What a great topic for a show!!

Shuleran, I used the email above. She emailed back asking for my phone number, so I'm hopeful. Naturemom

I don't know the air date, but FAAN has already been contacted to be on the show. For the Chicago area Jane Pauley airs at noon on WMAQ. It looks like you can submit your story at http://thejanepauleyshow.com/talktous/guest.php?topic=54

Nobody has responded to my email, so I called for tickets - (212) 664-3056. I'm planning on attending, so I'll take notes and post about how it went.

I have not had a reply to me email either. I live to far to attend, so I will have to be content with watching the show and requesting a tape.

Has anyone here been asked to participate on the show?

On Oct 14, 2004

I had received an email requesting my phone number, but nobody has called. I tried the number to request tickets that goingnuts posted, but they don't allow children in the audience (a ban on children?)

Anyway, let us know how it goes.

Naturemom,

What about the phone number in the original post? Did that one work?

Hi All,

I went to the taping. Here's a brief synopsis of the show.

First of all, it was all completely scripted. No audience participation, no opportunity for the audience to interact with Jane or any of the guests.

There were seven segments:

Segment 1 - a family with two MFA boys, 8 and 10. They discuss the stresses of food shopping, parties, family gatherings, etc. They mention that mom goes to school daily at lunch to be sure there are no accidents and to wipe down the tables (boys are allergic to milk, among other things). They stress what a full time job being the parent of FA kids is. They show the medication bag that they carry everywhere.

Segment 2 - 19 y.o. girl describes growing up with food allergies, and details a couple of her reactions, including one that almost killed her (yes, I was in tears). She mentioned how over time her allergies have become more severe, including airborne reactions. One of these airborne reactions resulted in her family changing the school's policy and allowing her to self-administer. She's now in college, living on her own.

Segment 3 - Adult with food allergies, talks about growing up before awareness about FA, and talks about how having two severly MFA kids changed how she sees it. Wrote a cookbook, Great Foods Without Worry. Allergist discusses theories about increase in incidence and the necessity for using epi quickly.

Segment 4 - Food Allergies and behavior, with Doris Rapp.

Segment 5 - Grocery shopping and label reading with Anne Munoz-Furlong. Description of cross contamination. Brief mention of legislation.

Segment 6 - Communion Wafer situation, with woman from newspaper article I posted last week.

Segment 7 - Brief interview with Jane Pauley's director and his young son, who is PA.

Nothing controversial was ever mentioned. No discussion of bans or anything like that. It was a positive but superficial treatment, sort of Food Allergies 101. Certainly nothing new for anyone in the FA community, but a good intro for those who haven't been exposed too much.

The show should air sometime next week. We'll have to check the website to see which day it will air.

As long as it is handled positively and we aren't portrayed as wackos, I agree.

Goingnuts,

Thanks for the update. It sounds like it went well. To us, this is just a basic overview, but to the general public it provides a good introduction to the seriousness. I'm really glad that there weren't any controversial topics brought up. We want the public to see the seriousness and be on our side, not stirred up(which could have happened during a talk show looking to boost ratings).

Amy,

Thanks alot for the update. I'm definitely planning on watching it. Considering some people I talk to about food allergies I think food allergy 101 is JUST what a TON of people need

I only remember to turn on the TV in time for the second half. It seemed pretty good, as far as it went.

On Oct 28, 2004

I just finished watching the show and I must say it was really good! So often times dealing with this allergy people look at me as if I've grown a second head when I try to explain all the things I have to do to keep Logan safe. I felt the show did a great job representing our daily struggles as well as emphasizing the seriousness of food allergy. Hopefully many who watched the show now have a new realistic awareness of the struggles and dangers of food allergy and will be more receptive to the accomodations we need.
