The folks that make tootsie rolls and tootsie roll lollipops also make many other candies. I spoke to them today and was told that they have a peanut/nutfree processing plant and none of their products contain peanuts/nuts. Check website at

With all the talk of candy at this time of year, I thought I would bring this thread to the top. Since it had been a while since the last entry, I double checked and was told that they are still peanut and tree nut free. The list of candies they make are:
Tootsie Rolls
Tootsie Pops
Flavor Roll Twisties
Tootsie Peppermint Pops
Caramel Apple Pops
Mutant Fruitant Pops
Tropical Dots

I was nervous about the charleston chews because it says 'vegetable protein' on the list without specifying the vegetable. I guess it must be safe though because I have also emailed tootsie (though not specifically about charleston chews) and they said it all was peanut and tree nut free.

Charlston Chew has nougat in it. If my memory serves me correctly, I thought FAANs "How to Read a Label" for PA had nougat on it.
Can anyone clarify?

Some nougats contain nuts... usually almonds or hazelnuts, but sometimes peanuts too.

Has anyone found Tootsie's Caramel-A-Lot bars at Wal-mart, K-Mart, Target or some other national discount or grocery store chain? One locally-owned grocery store near me was selling little trial sizes and my daughter loves them - but now they're not available anymore (they went fast - a friend of mine who has a p.a. daughter, too, and I were hoarding them!).
