Hi,
I am the Mom of an 11 year old peanut allegic child. We are facing middle school this year here in Georgia. For the first five years of my sons elementary education it was a fight and a struggle to keep the school from serving peanuts. He spent as many as three days a week eating in the school office ..or in a foyer area...he missed many hours of valuable instruction time(thanks to Mom he still stayed above level) Due to the fact that the principal was a control freak..and the lunch lady loved the fact that the FDA gave our school free peanut butter and didn't care about my sons health just made matters worse.....his fourth grade year ,he had five reactions in three months...he gained 30 lbs from the prednisone and still maintained an A -B average while Mom carried him to work with her to lay on folks couches while she worked because the airborne reaction had caused severe hives on his buttocks...after the fifth reaction ..I went to get his math work..just happened it had not been sent to the trailor his class was in..and discovered his third grade teacher was sitting in the room with the enrichment math teacher and had allowed my son to attend a class that had a jar of peanut butter on a table ..peanut butter dripping off the sides..not closed all the way ,that he was sitting with at least once a week....this year we have been blessed...new principal..I had asked for a 504 to be written the year before and went in asking for some one to write it up at the beginning of the year...he asked what I wanted for my son...I told him a peanut free table...peanuts served not at all...he got it to where it was only once a month..and buddy to send to the clinic with my son when he felt he had been exposed...he was awesome!! I don't know if he will ever realize how thoughtful I am!!! I am going to sit with him to discuss middle school..I hope all works out..the stress this causes is at times unbearable... I found out about 5 months ago that my grandmothers, cousins daughter, was also plagued with the peanut allergy..she was raised on a Georgia farm and due to the reactions she had was the first child in GA (in the early 1950's)to go Scottish Rite and have liquid cortizone placed on burnt spots in her lungs ...What amazes me is the school systemI am feeling truely blessed for this years principal!

I agree.... it is great to hear some good news for a change!!!!! You are lucky to have a good principal who makes an effort to prevent allergic reactions by keeping your child safe from peanuts
Best wishes for continued success and for further improvements for the future to improve safety

Wow mom of william! I always wondered how parents living in the middle of 'peanut country' were able to cope with PA. Thank Goodness for your principal. My heart really goes out to you for all the garbage you and your son have been put through.
I assume that the 504 will follow him into middle school---so that's great news. Also if it's a bigger school perhaps there will be more PA children there. (Unfortunately people do tend to listen more when it involves more than one individual.)
Whenever it becomes "unbearable", don't forget to come here and unload. It can be a great relief.
