Please excuse my ingnorance, but our school has decided to go peanut free, and I am trying to adjust. We are vegetarians and I am trying to gather as much info as possible.
Since my kids love to snack on Soy nuts, I was wondering does this type of nut have the same effect as the other nuts.

I have a PN/TN/sesame allergic daughter(age 2-1/2) who is able to eat dried/roasted soybeans(we would never call them nuts in our home!). There would be great concern for cross contamination, however, since many can be processed/packaged alongside other nuts and peanuts. I would never send her to school with them, so as to avoid confusing those who are caring for her at school.
I do not know how peanut bans work, but as a parent of an allergic child, I would have concerns of how teachers could safely police many children and determine who has safe soybeans or not, etc... My guess is it is safest to avoid them in schools. I feel the same way about soy butter. Though we use it at home, I rarely if ever give it to dd in front of anyone who does not fully comprehend the gravity of the allergy. It is too confusing to use this, and expect others to understand it is not peanut butter at a glance. I am not alway comfortable giving it to my daughter, since it could confuse her as well, but she is picky and needs some healthy protein and fats in her diet.
It is thoughtful of you to come here and ask about this. I do know some PN allergic people also have soy allergies, as they are both legumes. Sorry so wordy, but trying to share the PN allergic perspective on these sometimes confusing looking and tasting alternative "nut" type foods. becca

hmmm...the only ones I've found that don't have a cross-x or 'may contain' warning for peanuts or other nuts (I am TNA too) is the IM Healthy brand. I found them in Whole Foods, but you can also order online.

Just copied this from the web -- we found them at Wild oats, but Whole Foods may carry them, too. They had a Peanut/tree-nut-free sticker on them.

Yeah, the Mighty Mo Munchies are really good! They are so great for making trail mixes, too. I've found them at the Whole Foods in Cary, NC.

Here's another source -- they have sunflower and soy nut products.
