So mad at Nabisco I want to spit

pHi, this is my first post after lurking for months. You all have been such a source of information for me and I thank you./p
pMy older DD is allergic to peanuts and peanut products -- very seriously /
I have tried to educate myself, and those around DD. I've read dozens of books, articles, written and called companies for ingredient lists, done hundreds hours of research on the internet, belong to several groups, take her to good docs, etc., etc., etc. /p
pThat is why it is so frustrating when the food companies don't play fair. /p
pDH was taking DD with him yesterday to deliver a stork sign (I own a stork announcement service -- have a baby and I'll put a 7 foot stork in your yard announcing it to the neighborhood -- ha ha!). /p
pAnyway, he took some snacks along, including a sleeve of PLAIN Ritz crackers. No where on the box are they labeled as maybe containing peanuts or peanut products. I know that some food items that don't contain a peanut product still might have come into contact with peanuts from assembling and packaging (for example -- plain MMs can contain peanuts as they are packaged on the same lines with the peanut MMs.) They are labeled as such. /p
pAs you probably know, Ritz makes peanut butter Ritz carcker sandwiches too. I've had reservations in the past about giving plain Ritz's to DD, due to possible cross contamination, but I read the labels religiously, and Nabisco is such a big company, *surely* they would let me know via the label if there was an issue, right? /p
p~NO, they didn't.~ /p
pDH was pulling a cracker out from the sleeve to give DD, and it has some peanut butter on it. I am feeling so many emotions right now: grateful to DH for finding it before DD ate any of them; mad at myself for not going with my gut and keeping them out of her diet even though they weren't labeled a risk; and MAD at Nabisco for not having the where-with-all to know to label accordingly!!! /p
pI had to vent somewhere; I hope you don't mind my doing so here. /p
pIf this makes you mad as a mom/dad too, wanna do me a favor or two? /p
pEmail Nabisco and tell them this makes you mad, too. /p

pEmail the FDA Commissioner at [email][/email] and help me demand them to invest more resources to ensure that 1) food labels completely and accurately list the presence of all known allergens, including those used in flavorings; 2) food manufacturers adopt measures to prevent the unintentional contamination of their products with undeclared food allergens; and 3) food manufacturers include a toll-free number on their labels that consumers can call for more information about ingredients. /p

Mcpaige, I'm so sorry your family had this experience!! We eat Whole Wheat Ritz crackers all the time and now (of course) I'm scared silly. I'm going to call them today and find out if the WW ones are made on a separate line. Ugh, how awful, my stomach got all clenched just reading your post. I'll post if I find out anything useful after talking to Nabisco.

Was the peanut butter on the sleeve or actually on a cracker? The reason I ask is because I recently bought some original Ritz crackers and on the outside of all of the sleeves there was a spot of some sort of brown crumbly stuff - looked like chocolate but didn't feel brave enough to taste it! Anyway, that made me question just how well they do clean their lines, and with what you're saying about the pb, I think I'm staying away from Nabisco. I never did feel too great about them, anyway.

I had a similiar situation happen with Ritz crackers. It scared us all to death. I called Nabisco to give them a piece of my mind and they assured me their was NO way that cross contamination occured. They said that what looked like Peanut Butter was actually Ritz dough that didn't get completely baked during the process. They sent me material to mail the crackers back to quality control to have them checked out, which I did. They also assured me if they found anything they would let me know and I never heard from them. I feel safe letting my son have Ritz crackers.

Same thing happened to my son. He was eating the baseball-style Ritz from his lunch at school, the unbaked dough looked just like peanut butter, he did the right thing and called home. I thought that someone had tampered with his lunch, it looks exactly like peanut butter, and I tasted it and it is just cracker. I too called Ritz to complain, they had me send the crackers back to their quality control people. My son continues to eat plain Ritz crackers and has never had any trouble.

I'm just as damn mad as you are but for a different reason. Nabisco makes Chips Ahoy cookies. I give them to my son who is PA and has eaten them safely. I won't buy Keebler they are known to have peanut traces. Well anyway the other night a commercial came on for Nabisco Peanut Butter Chips Ahoy cookies!! Damnit! Can't they leave the damn things alone! A choc. chip cookie should remain as such. Forget the regular choc. chip cookies now. Now I'm truly afraid of cross-contamination. I'll have to call the @#$%^&*$# company!!!!

Just like a couple of you mentioned, they say that it is cracker residue, and not pb. They are sending me a mailer to mail the whole thing back in for them to research.
While I want to believe them, I asked the cs rep, who was very nice, if it was completely impossible for it to be a cross contamination issue, and she said, that she would have to research it first to be 100% sure.
I'll keep you posted. Until I hear otherwise from them, no ritz crackers here.

mcpaige, welcome! I'm in Canada and last month I have an absolutely wonderful conversation with the gentleman that looks after production concerns re food allergies.
Once I got his information, I came in here and posted it in any Nabisco thread that was going at the time.
However, this seems to be another case of a company that many of us feel "safe" with in Canada and our U.S. friends (from this PA site) are not able to. It really enangers me.
There was another Nabisco related thread I went into last night and I'll make the same comment again. Canada has a much smaller population than the U.S., so therefore, a much smaller PA population. However, name brand manufacturers label much better here than in the U.S. What bothers me in particular about this is that the companies we feel "safe" with here in Canada are owned by the same company in the U.S. Why can't a company such as Nabisco or Kellogg's have a company wide, international, awareness of food allergies and correct labeling procedures. I just don't get it.
I am going to go and try to find the post I made re Nabisco Canada and you'll see what I mean.
Also, someone mentioned Chips Ahoy cookies above. If you do now feel uncomfortable with Chips Ahoy or Oreos (both by Nabisco), please visit the Snacks, Recipes section where you'll find a recipe for both.
Cayley's Mom is compiling a list of companies that we are going to address in our Action forum. I am going to e-mail her this page to see if we can get Nabisco added.

mcpaige, here is the response I got from Nabisco Canada. Please, anyone reading this, please remember that it is Canada specific only and does not include anything to do with the U.S. Also, mcpaige, I wanted to tell you that we've scared of people who lurk! [img][/img] Only kidding!
I received the following information to-day from Dan Bellisario at
1-800-668-2253, who called me in response to an e-mail I had sent
concerning Christie's products.
The Christie's products that I currently buy and now know for sure are
"safe" are Triscuits, Premium Plus Crackers, Ritz Crackers, Oreos, and
Chips Ahoy, unless they have the "may contain" warning on them.
I have also brought up a number of other threads where
Nabisco/Christie's or one of their products was being discussed to
also place the information there.
Well, I have information to post finally from Nabisco (owners of
Christie's in Canada).
So, I will place the information I received to-day here but also in
other threads where it may be appropriate.
I had e-mailed Nabisco re Christie products in December. I had not
had a response. So, to-day, I e-mailed them again.
I received a prompt telephone call from Mr. Dan Bellisario of Nabisco
Canada. He can be contacted at 1-800-668-2253.
He indicated to me that the products I am currently buying are all
completely safe and run on dedicated lines. There is actually a
concrete barrier between the parts of the manufacturing facility that
contain peanuts/nuts and the area that is manufacturing without

They work very closely with AAIA and had sent the alert to FAN.
