Snap Peas - Peanut Allergy Information

Snap Peas

Publish date:

HI all , my daughter has been allergic to peanut since before two years, she is now 8 , no other food allergies until now , after eating sugar snap peas over the last 6 months she is now getting hives around her mouth , I checked with the company , they have taken steps to ensure no use of peanuts around or in manufacturing so she must have an issue with them because they are legumes , anyone else see this happen suddenly . and if not watch your kids or selves after eating new legumes even over time .

It's possible and probably more probable that she is allergic to other legumes. Was she ever tested for them?

There are many people with peanut allergy that are NOT allergic to legumes and then there are many that are.

It might be time to discuss this one with your allergist.

Let us know how it turns out.

I am allergic to peanuts and peas. My RAST test is higher for peas than peanuts. I do NOT eat any legumes at all.

Hi Maphiemom...for what it's worth, I'll add what our first allergist told us many years ago. We were advised to stay away from Legumes whether or not my son could tolerate them as consuming them (in his opinion) could reduce the chances of outgrowing the peanut allergy and it could lead to the onset of additional allegies (peas etc). His take on it was that because peanuts are part of the legume family there were similarities in the proteins between them and other legumes. He felt that the exposure to such proteins could prove detrimental.

I ran this theory by another allergist we visisted with subsequently and he did not seem to agree. It's still one of those topics I feel a bit confused over.

Thank you for sharing your experience as many people probably don't realize the possible connection.
