should I avoid legumes?

I am confused. My allergist says to stay away from all nuts which I agree, but he also said to stay away from all legumes including chick peas,lentils,kidney beans and green beans.He says total avoidance is the best way to possible rid my ds of his p/a. On the other hand, I have heard that we should be introducing small amounts of legumes to build up a resistance. I will not do this. I wish the medical field would stick to one thing or another. These theories are totally opposite!!?? [img]http://uumor.pair.com/nutalle2/peanutallergy/confused.gif[/img]

When I read other peoples posts they eat them with no problem. My ds is p/a and all nuts but when he was little we gave him string beans and chick peas without any problem until my allergist and GP said to stop.

I am getting so sick of broccolli, and asparagus! Brussel sprouts are yuckkkkkkky and bitter so we don't eat them.

p.s. My ds is severly allergic to green peas also. When I cook them for my dh and myself my son's eyes swell so I stopped buying them.

My pa tna son used to not be allergic to legumes....now he is! My allergist told me to avoid them, and I thought that was a bit extreme. Now he is allergic to chickpeas, green peas, and several other types of legumes. Just our experience!

Your DS is allergic to two legumes- peanuts and peas. If it were my ds (age 3.5) I'd avoid lugumes for a few more years and then test but that's just me. Depending on DS's age you may want to follow your allergist's advice and continue to avoid until further testing.
Perhaps it is time to hit the library for a few good cookbooks to help you feel better about avoiding legumes. There are many more great foods out there besides broccoli and asparagus [img]http://uumor.pair.com/nutalle2/peanutallergy/smile.gif[/img] And I'm with you on the brussel sprouts!

My son is anaphylactic to peanuts and nuts and is also allergic to soy. We avoid all legumes.

I have an opposite experience from (name edited out by office). I am PA and TNA (mainly almonds and cashews) and tested a "class III" for RAST for peas about a year ago (we did some 40 things including various nuts, seeds, legumes). However, peas have never bothered me.
I've never had a physical problem with any legumes -- and I eat chickpeas, beans (pinto, black, red), green beans, pea pods fairly regularly, as well as soy (edamame and soymilk)
I think every person is different with food allergies.
That being said, if your ds is severely allergic to peas and peanuts, then maybe you should be careful with other legumes til he's older or until you can do some skin or blood tests to give you a fuller picture.

My 3 yr old son is EA/PA. He used to react to peas, but SPT and Cap Rast were both negative. He still won't eat them. He eats green beans a couple times a week. That is the only legume that he will eat. He used to eat all kinds of beans, but doesn't like them anymore.

It seems to be a really individual thing, because, as I understand it, there are many different proteins in legumes, and one person can be allergic to a protein that's in both peanuts and peas, and another can be allergic to a different protein in peanuts, so they don't have a problem with peas. In my DD's case, she's allergic to peanuts and raw peas, but she doesn't have a problem with cooked peas. She also eats split peas, kidney beans, green beans, and I think it's great Northern beans or white beans, the basic ones in baked beans and bean soup. We haven't been told by the allergist to avoid other legumes except the raw peas that have caused mild symptoms.

Interesting question...
I would be very interested in knowing if avoiding ALL legumes would be helpful in outgrowing allergy??
My dd is PA/TNA/SOY and we have not been told by our allergist to avoid anything other than those particular foods.
My dd's favorite vegetable is green beans and she has probably eaten them 3-4 times a week for most of her life and she is now 10!
She has always disliked peas. But last night I made a homemade chicken potpie and added carrots, corn, green beans and peas. She took one bite, said she didn't like it and then told me her tongue was itchy!
Now I am wondering....could it be peas? I've heard of so many people w/ PA also being allergic to peas.

At one point Jason was allergic to peanut and soy. We didn't avoid all legumes, and he's actually outgrown the soy allergy.
Neither of our allergists suggested it to us, but it might have been different for us because he was allergic to 10-12 foods at the time, and avoiding all legumes wouldn't have left him with much to eat.

My son is allergic to peanuts, soy, all beans and peas and milk. When he was young, the lentil and soy allergies were present but he tolerated other beans o.k. and loved them. He could also eat raw (sugar snap) peas.
Unfortunately, he became allergic to other beans and peas between the ages of 1 and 5. We only knew when he started having reactions to foods that had previously been safe. Some of these reactions were quite serious - one required hospitalization.
Research (according to Scott Sicherer) shows that one in 20 kids who are allergic to peanuts will have a pervasive legume/lentil allergy. It has to do with the type of protein to which they are allergic - the seed pod protein is common between all these plants. Because your child has demonstrated an allergy to peas already, you should be very cautious in this area.
