Parents of Food Allergy Children: 'Shocking Levels of Stress'

By David Stringer, PA

Parents of children with food allergies suffer more anxiety than people who are told they have cancer, new research claimed today.

Psychologists discovered shocking levels of stress among mothers and fathers attending clinics with their youngsters and said many suffered physical effects of stress for weeks or months.

Dr Rebecca Knibb, of the University of Derby, surveyed 120 parents at allergy centres in Nottingham and Birmingham and found 36% showed clinical levels of anxiety.

Their average levels of stress were well above the average of those diagnosed with cancer and people involved in the study showed similarly high rates of depression.
