Grandma has soap called Shea Butter, the other day 6yr old grandson with TN/PN allergy used the soap (in pump) and then ran in the living room and said grandma, is that soap safe, it has picture of nuts on it, grandma said yes, but now wonders?? after looking at the picture. He didnt have a reaction, thank god, but I guess I should get rid of the soap, IS SHEA BUTTER a NUT Family member??????????

Shea butter is another name for hazelnut butter.

There has been some debate about that... I think it is now classified as a tree nut. My son has a PA only he has tested neg for tree nuts ( the major ones) so we don't have a problem with it

I asked DD's allergist about shea butter and he said she didn't need to avoid products with this. She's PA and TNA - almonds and hazlenuts. It shouldn't cause problems.

Here is a link to explain it but it is NOT a nut of any kind. Much like Coconut is not a nut it is a fruit. It is however one of the very best natural moisturisers you can use.

I hope this helps.

Our allergist did tell us to avoid shea. I wish there was a test for it.

FAAN lists sheanut as a tree-nut on their "how to read a label for a tree-nut free diet" card.
