Sesame Oil? - Peanut Allergy Information

Sesame Oil?

As far as I know now, my daughter is allergic only to peanuts. I am avoiding sesame and all tree nuts just out of principle. Old El Paso's taco seasoning has sesame oil in it - does anyone know if I have to avoid the sesame oil also? I have heard that in some oils they break down the proteins - but not sure about sesame.

Sesame oil does contain the protein, so it is not safe for someone with sesame allergy.

I agree - I avoid sesame oil. (I am allergic to sesame seeds.)

Michele, are you talking about the powdered seasoning mix that comes in the box? I'm going to have to check this out because I know I've eaten taco's with no reaction, but I'm not sure if it was a different brand. Or maybe made different in Canada?

Anne Marie,

It was Old El Paso Dinner Kits and it was in the taco seasoning mix. I thought it was okay because General Mills distributed and when I glanced at it in the store, it did list major allergens but not nuts/peanuts. I always re-read the box more thoroughly when I open it - that's when I noticed the sesame oil. I prefer Ortega, but was not sure if that was safe. To be honest, both hubby and I thought they were alittle on the hot side anyway, so I guess I will try McCormick's next.
