pHello, I am searching for a listing of all peanut free schools in the US. Webr /
live in Pennsylvania now and our principal is supportive of making changesbr /
for peanut allergic children, but we would like to know where to findbr /
schools that have made the transition. Please help, thanks/p
p----------/p
pThis was emailed to us recently, I wanted to remind everyone to please post or let us know if you know of a school that is dealing well with peanut allergy. I understand that many of us do not DARE to post about how well our own schools are doing for fear that all the work we have done to make the school safe for our children may be taken away./p
pI understand this is a problem and how it makes it difficult for others with children with peanut allergy to locate a safe school for their child if they have to relocate. I hope you will find the courage to let others know about any school that is working to keep those with peanut allergy safe./p
pIf you do not want to post it and would like to email us with it please do, you may help a family in need./p

Stay Safe,/p

I don't know if you are just looking for public schools but MOST private schools in Manhattan are nut free.

MY NIECE AND NEPHEW GO TO A CATHOLIC SCHOOL IN LOWELL, MASS AND THEY BOTH HAVE CHILDREN WHO ARE ALLERGIC TO PEANUTS IN THEIR CLASS. THEY ARE NOT ALLOWED TO BRING SNACKS, SANDWICHES, ECT. TO SCHOOL. THEY ARE IN TWO DIFFERENT GRADES.
ONE DAY MY NIECE BROUGHT A PEANUT BUTTER AND JELLY SANDWICH TO SCHOOL (GOT MESSED UP WITH MY SISTER-IN-LAWS LUNCH) AND SHE WAS NOT ALLOWED TO EAT IT THEY THREW IT OUT.
MY SON IS ONLY 19 MONTHS AND IS ALLERGIC TO PEANUTS, SO WHEN THE TIME COMES, I WILL PROBABLY BE THINKING OF PUTTING HIM IN THAT SCHOOL BECAUSE THEY HAVE A BACKGROUND OF DEALING WITH CHILDREN THAT HAVE ALLERGIES.

Hi, I was in touch with a private, Catholic school in Grand Rapids, MI... St. Peter and Paul. The school was scheduled to be peanut free by January. That, meaning they would not serve it in their hot/cold lunches provided by the school. I do not believe they forbid it to be brought in from home.

Richard,
Sorry it took so long to get back to you, just got back from vacation!
Off the top of my head:
1. Trevor Day School
2. The Dalton School
3. The Caedmon School
Now of course I would always double check the particular policies. Some of the schools vary based on whether or not there is a PA child there at the time.
For example, the school my own daughter goes to (totally nut and peanut free) had a child with a severe egg allergy who was touch sensitive as well as smell sensitive so they had to adjust their menu accordingly! Now that child is no longer in the school so they have gone back to making things that do have eggs in them.
Hey, for $17,000 a year you would expect them to be on top of the allergy problems and most of them I think are.
Of course again I am sure they don't actually call manufacturers, just read the lables, so if you are that concerned about cross contamination in factories, etc. that is a different story.
Finally, all schools face the problem of parents bringing in snacks for holidays, parties etc. especially the lower grades.
My daughters school is especially viglient in stopping snacks at the door. They don't care if the parents get miffed (as they do occassionally) about having to return the M&M's etc. But you can never be 100% sure.
We had a mother who was actually shocked that she had to bring home the cupcakes she and her son made becuase she had put peanut M&M's on them! The teahcers tried to explain it but she was convinced they were okay (she knew about the no nut policy) because they had a candy coating!! So even if the parents have good intentions you always have to be vigelent!
Its really easy to call up the various schools and ask about their policies. Sometimes they are listed in the schools handbooks as well.
NYC private schools recognize that food alleriges in children are on the rise for some reason and unless they have their heads in the sand, they are all attempting to address this problem.
good luck in your search!

Just wanted to let you know that getting schools to go peanut free has been something that I have been fortunate enough to do for my 7 year old daughter. Her current elementary school has been peanut free for one year following our 504 plan and we are gearing up to do it all again when we move 10 days from now. Already that ball is rolling with the new school district. It seems that with enough attention to details and mentioning of ACLU action I have been able to get the school districts to pay attention.

In Jefferson County, Littleton, Colorado I know most PUBLIC elementary schools are peanut free, specifically Coronado Elementary if you want a name. In Douglas County, also Littleton or Highlands Ranch, Colorado there are 5 public elementary schools that went peanut free this school year. I would recommend contacting the superintendent of schools for these counties if you want detailed information.

Mom2two:
My two older daughters go to a private school in Roslyn, NY which is NOT nut-free. I am going to schedule an appointment with the director to convince him to become nut free because my 2.5 year old will be attending in the fall. They serve peanut butter in the lunchroom, but assure me that they are "vigilant" about who gets it and that they "have dealt with this problem with other students for years" and that "nothing has ever happened". I would like to make the argument that most other private schools ARE nut free and that they are BEHIND THE TIMES. Do you have any suggestions about how I could obtain a listing of nut free schools in the area, or how I should go about most effectively making my case. Anything will help...Thanks!

I would suggest getting in touch with the Parent's League, its an organization in NYC that has a listing and booklet of all the private schools in NYC and their contact info. From there you could just call and make your own inquiries. I tend to doubt there is an actual list anywhere with the info you are looking for but you could make up one of your own.

Nikole; you said that mentioning the ACLU action has brought attention...can you explain what action? I did a search on www.ACLU.org and could not come up with anything. I'll be meeting with our public school soon regarding my 4 yr. old Pre-K registration and would like to have as much available info with me from various agencies and schools. Thanks!
