school meeting on Wednesday

We are having a review session of our daughters 504 plan on Wednesday. Part of this meeting will be planning for next year as well. My daughter is going from kindergarten to first grade so things change a bit.She is anaphylactic to tree nuts.

We have written up a tentative 504 for next year and attached research articles that support our wishes. Her ped. is reviewing the document and we expect his support.

Our daughter is the "first" severe allergy the district has dealt with and so now the big wigs are coming to the meeting.I think they are realizing they might be setting a precident with what is decided.Does anyone have any advice for us? Things that have worked well for you? The school personnel has been very supportive for most of the year (a few problems along the way). I am concerned over the district people becoming involved.Any advice or help would be appreciated.

pWe had our school meeting on Wednesday. We went in with a list of 26 items we wanted. They ranged from a nut free classroom to an aide to supervise our daughter to how she will be dismissed from class. We got all 26 items we wanted implemented. To put it mildly we are so excited. It feels so good to know we already have a 504 plan in place for next year.I did a lot of research to support our points and they could not argue when presented with written proof!i really feel like my daughter is going to have a great year!/p

pRilira - Can you send me a copy of your 26 things? My son will go to kindergarten in the fall of 2001. I am already concerned and we saw our allergist last week. He said to have him take his own food and educate his teacher. He is not worried about him smelling or touching it. He said the only problem he will have is if he takes another child's pbjelly sandwich and eats it! I am worried. I have read so much that others have done at school. pThe aide is assigned to my daughter for 2 1/2 hours a day. This covers right before recess, recess, before during and after lunch. The aides duties are to clean my daughters spot at the designated nut free table.Monitor the food of the other kids who want to sit at the table,supervise the kids washing their hands before returning to the classroom. They carry my daughters epi-pack and are trained on when and how to give it. They are required to keep my daughter in their line of sight at all times.They are only responsible for my daughter./p

Wow! I'm impressed that you got all 26 items you requested, especially the aide. Did you meet much resistance during the meeting?/p
pMy husband and I will be meeting with school officials soon too since our son will begin kindergarten in the Fall. We have purchased just about everything it seems from the FAN and are trying to pull together a plan of action. I spoke with the secretary today about setting up an appointment with the principal and the nurse, for starters. She dismissed the need for meeting with the principal and said the school has a few food-allergic students and ones with diabetes. But I spoke with the nurse several months ago (on the phone) and my son will be the first to go to this school with a severe food allergy. I can see already that this might take some time./p

pOur section 504 plan/p
pA. Nurse will provide inservice to all teachers at a staff meeting twice during the year to educate them about nut allergies and treatment of anaphylaxis. Nurse and parent will provide detailed training to classroom teacher,instructional aide,librarian, and computer lab teacher regarding emergency procedures and contamination issues./p
pB. A classroom policy will be developed as follows: All food served to students in Rachel's class must be cleared by Rachel's parents or it will not be served. Unplanned,unexpected food brought into the classroom by other parents will either not be distributed, or be distributed outside the classroom as the students leave for the day./p
pC.School and parent will write a joint letter to parents of all classmates informing them of her allergy,the classroom food policy,and the nut free status of the classroom./p
pD.Parents will provide an epi-pak containing prescribed epi-pen,antihistamine,and other materials as determined by parent. Medication consent forms will be completed yearly by parent and signed by physician. Parent will be responsible for replacing medication when it expires./p
pE.Parent or designee will walk Rachel into school each day and supervise Rachel until teacher is present. Parent or designee will meet Rachel at the classroom door as she leaves for the day.Teacher will walk Rachel to the office if parent is late./p
pF.Teacher will leave a copy of this 504 plan and any other instructions in a spot easily accessible to substitutes. Parent or designee will talk with substitute before leaving for the day and be sure that substitute has located and understands plan./p
pG.All students will be taken to the restroom to wash their hands prior to entering the classroom./p
pH.Parent and nurse will show parent provided video on food allergies to Rachel's classmates and teach them (at age appropriate level) about allergies and about steps necessary to protect Rachel./p
pI.Teacher will keep a parent provided emergency box readily available which contains first aid supplies for Rachel. Parent will provide snacks for Rachel./p
pJ.Rachel will take the epi-pak along with her whenever she leaves the classroom./p
pK.Computer keyboard in computer lab and in classroom will be cleaned prior to Rachel using it./p
pL.Rachel will eat snack and lunch at a table designated for her. Lunch table and seat where Rachel will be sitting must be wiped off prior to each time she uses it./p
pM.Parent will instruct Rachel she may not share food and utensils./p
pN.A classroom aide will be assigned to supervise Rachel between 10:45-1:15pm.Aide will be assigned to supervise cleaning of designated table prior to recess and lunch.Aide may take student to wash their hands,monitor snacks at the designated table,and will be responsible for direct supervision of Rachel during snack and lunch break,including playtime on playground./p
pO.Rachel will inform teacher or aide of any developing symptoms./p
pP.Students will not eat in classroom on rainy days./p
pQ.Rachel will only eat food brought from home or approved by parent or designee./p
pR.Parent will instuct Rachel not to use the school soap.Parent provided soap will be in her pack./p
pS.Rachel will have a parent provided water bottle to drink from so she does not have to use the water fountain.She will be allowed to have her water in class and on the playground./p
pT.Parent will volunteer in the classroom as agreed upon with classroom teacher./p
pU.Parent or designee will accompany Rachel on all field /

This is our tentative plan. It is a little different then what I e-mailed some people because we combined some items./p
pThe term epi-pak refers to a small purse type bag that we use at school to keep her stuff in. We got it at Old Navy and had the front embroidered(sp?) with a red cross and Rachel's epi-pen. The back we sewed on a clear window that has Rachel's picture and descibes the symptoms of a reaction. Epi-pen instructions are on a big laminated card on the inside.It is adjustable so her aide can wear it while she plays on the playground./p
pThe letter to the parents is taken in part from Lisa Cipriano_Collins book and part we added. It will be signed by the distict nursing supervisor and the school principal.Here is the letter:/p
pDear parent,/p
pI would like to make you aware of a health issue that the children are learning about this year. One of their classmates,Rachel xxx,has a severe allergy to tree nuts,their products,and oils.Strict avoidance is the only way to prevent an allergic reaction.The allergy is life threatening. For this reason we must be most cautious with the classroom snacks and party foods.Your child is still welcome to bring nut snack items from home.However,each time he or she chooses to bring a snack without nuts,your child plays an important part in decreasing the risk to Rachel. To help further decrease the risk we have implemented the following food policy:/p
p 1.All food served to the students must be purchased in a store./p
p 2. The teacher must be given prior notice about any food items being brought into the classroom excluding the student's daily snack. If this does not occur the food item will not be distributed until the end of the day./p
p 3.All items must contain a complete ingredient list. If the list is omitted the food will not be distributed until the end of the day./p
p 4.If nuts are listed as an ingredient or the label has a"may contain nuts" warning the food will not be distributed until the end of the day./p
pWe want Rachel to partcipate fully in all class activities this year. With your help, we can keep our classroom safe for everyone. I am most appreciative of your understanding and cooperation./p
p*********************************************The distributed at the end of the day was our big compromise. What that means is the teacher would take the item to the lunch area and give it to the students as they are leaving school grounds. This will happen after my daughter has been dismissed for the day and has left the area./p
