Well, we had a RAST test done last week. Went to the allergist for monthly shot and results today. Soybean, Almond, Brazil Nut, Cashew, Coconut, Peanut, Pecan, Walnut all came out zero. The RAST for Mango was class 1, Hazelnut Class 3 and Pistachio class 1.

So, we did the skin test for peanut to see if we would also get a negative skin test. Of course, the stupid wheal came up pretty big 16mm again.

I'm so disappointed. I could really just cry. For a fleeting moment I was imagining a world without epi pens, 504 plans and daily worries.

The doctor said that the skin test is more reliable in his opinion because you have the IgE floating around in your bloodstream. The blood tests sometimes just don't detect it. When the skin test is done and a wheal appears, its is showing that the IgE for peanut is certainly present.

So anyway, just my disappointment of the day.

Oh, I'm sorry the skin test was pos. But I guess the good news is, with a zero Rast test maybe outgrowing IS in your future. Does the doctor seem to think so?

So sorry to hear this.

Well, I would be excited if that many came back negative(were they all positive in the past???) Sorry mango, hazelnut and pistachio are still positive though(and peanut to skin)....but stay hopeful and positive okay, HUGS [img][/img]

The doctor is not impressed with the zeros especially after the big wheal. He says in his opinion, the skin test is more reliable. He had never been RAST tested for tree nuts, only skin tested. I don't have those numbers as a different dr did that skin testing. He did not talk about my son outgrowing based on these tests. Nothing has apparently changed. He said that rast tests can vary for an array of reasons. With a positive skin test, an oral challenge is not even an option even with the zero rast. So frustrating that there is not a safe way to know for sure other than a potentially dangerous oral challenge. Dr. also said that since he has had previous anaphylaxis, oral challenge not in the realm. Additionally, I don't believe he's ever even eaten a tree nut, so the test could be off because he hasn't developed the IeG. He didn't bother to skin test for the other tree nuts. I'm becoming more distraught by the minute. Thanks guys.

I'm sorry that the SPT came back positive. What a bummer.

I'm so sorry. I know the hopeful anticipation and also the letdowns.

But try to keep in mind- your life today is no different than it was last week. You will continue doing what you always have done. Stay strong.

waaah. That is a big disappointment. But isn't it the opposite? I thought you could have a positive skin and have it not mean much -- but I geuss that is when the wheal? is under a certain size.

Try if you can to do something really nice for you like a massage or something. Something to get you through the disapointment.
