pThis is a general call to arms to all residents of Texas. During the last couple of days I have spoken with people from various school districts, the Texas Department of Health, and the office of Senator Jane Nelson and the office of the Lt. Governor Bill Ratliff. To be honest there is nothing that can be done to provide more protection for PA children in Texas schools during the 2001-2002 school year. It will be about 18 months before there is any hope of getting legislation passed to make sure that Joe the mechanic is not in charge of a school districts health program, or to see to it that every teacher is knowledgeable about what to do when anaphylactic shock occurs.br /
There is much that can and must be done to prepare for the next legislative session and the coming school year. First contact every state representative and senator about your concerns. Let them know that you do not want the tragedy that happened to Nathan repeated in this state- EVER. Second follow up your call with a letter and an E-mail. Start doing this now. When the legislature starts back up we need to be ready with reasonable recommendations. In the mean time we need to contact every school Superintendent, Principal, and nurse to make sure that every person responsible for our children is aware of what to do in the event of a sever reaction, how to administer the epipen, and when to administer it. I have begun visiting all the schools in Wise County to make sure that; 1 They have an epipen trainer at each campus. 2 They are made aware that each teacher needs to know how to use it. 3 That each district reviews their health protocol to take the epipens out of the locked nurses office and into the hands of the teachers who have children with allergies in the class or the personal possession of older students. 4 Make them aware that it is better to err on the side of safety than to wait and see. If you are interested in doing this in your county please e-mail me. With a coordinated effort we should be able to visit every school by the beginning of the next school year./p

Teresa, is there anything we can do? I know many people would be happy to do anything we could to help.
I was not a member of this board at the time this all took place, but I have read all the posts and articles. I would like to express my sincere condolences to you and your family.
I think it is wonderful that you came in here to update us and keep in touch. Nathan is remembered here quite often and you and his dad are an inspiration.
Again, thank you and let us know if there is anything we can do.

Thanks for the offer, but no, there's nothing to be done at this point. I think the better question is whether or not we can do anything for the folks here.
I'm not very active on this board, but I refer people to it all the time and I keep an eye on what's happening and I know Rick does as well.

Theresa,
Thank you for the update. In the absence of anything concrete that we can do, I'll send all good vibes your way.
You and your family are in my thoughts often.
I wish you the best of luck with this.

I don't know yet; the judge has "taken it under advisement", which basically just means that he's thinking about it. I'm quite tired of waiting!
