I keep seeing Zantac and allergies popping up here and there. I have taken zantac for 10 years and just in the past 3 have developed several oral allergies. My recent skin prick test of 87 allergens, yes I know a lot for one back at one time, about 70 came back in the positive range. I even had a positive control. So 2 questions, Isn't zantac a possible reason people are becoming allergic because it enters the intestines without the complete digestion of stomach acids? and I guess it isn't enough just to take only that since there are times I need benadryl too. Would taking Zantac give false positives on skin testing? I would think but any input would be great.

Thank you all!

I would say Zantac and other proton pump inhibitors and Zantac as something you take with Epi when you are having an ana reaction are two different things. [[EDITED TO ADD: Zantac is NOT a Proton Pump Inhibitor--it's an H2 Blocker.]]
I think the link between these antacids and food allergies is very interesting and think taking them may have had something to do with my developing shellfish and sesame allergies within the last year and a half (I'm 40). And DS was on one of these types of meds for the first few months of his life (and I was consuming peanuts then).
That said, I was on Zantac--150 mg 2x/day when I had my ana reaction to shellfish last January. When my doctor said he'd put me on it and I said I had had one that morning, he said, "No, I would have you taken one during your reaction."
I've lost weight and have been able to get off Zantac and am thrilled. I've bought into this theory as a possible cause for FA so much (I've internalized it anyway), that I was terrified of becoming allergic to something else. That may still happen. What I can say is that my sesame is getting worse, as is my shellfish--at least my reactions are getting worse (I was tested about 10 months ago and so haven't been tested since).
Only in the last week have I had some problems with reflux, which cause problems with asthma for me, and I'm getting into my "bad" asthma season, so we'll see if I can stay off. But I'll do everything I can to stay off. However, I do keep some with me in case of an ana reaction.

That is so very interesting.
I fear that with my small hiatel hernia and IBS that I can not get off the Zantac. I use to take it 150mg bid now 150mg qhs. There was a time I took 300mg bid. Am I correct in assuming that all antacids would have a similar/same affect?
Thank you

No--not things like Tums. But proton pump inhibitors like Prevacid, Propulsid, etc.--and as a factor for a cause.
My doctor mentioned Zantac specifically for an ana reaction. I don't know what other drugs have the same chemical makeup.

Zantac isn't a PPI, it's a histamine inhibitor (specially H2). It's used to suppress stomach acid formation, but it does so in a different mechanism from PPIs. H1 and H2 antagonists can also be used to treat some allergic reactions.

Thanks for clarifying that Krasota. But Nexium is a PPI, right? I was on that for quite a while before going on Zantac (Nexium caused breakouts for me). I tried several over the years.

Nexium is a PPI. PPIs are the only thing which work for my GERD.
