Does anyone know an alternative to coconut oil for popping popcorn in a commercial popcorn maker? Our school hasn't been able to find a regular vegetable oil that will work in our machine without clumping up. My son is allergic to all nuts including tree nuts so it's a problem. Please email me if you know of anything!
Thanks. Nicole
Has your son been tested for coconut? Most tree nut allergic people don't have a problem with coconut because it is not a nut. I believe the Food Allergy Network had this info. on a pamphlet about what what tree nut allergic people should avoid.
Hi~
Yes, I double checked with the doctor and he is to avoid coconut. Thanks for your reply.

Nicole, has your son been tested for coconut? It is not a tree nut. It is a fruit and part of an entirely separate family. Is your son allergic also to fruits? I'm just suggesting you clarify this because most tree nut allergic persons are not coconut allergic.
Hi Kathryn ~
Thanks for your question. It makes me wonder now. No, he isn't allergic to fruit - only to tree nuts. It poses an interesting question doesn't it? What exactly is coconut? .....where do you suggest that I might be able to verify this information?
Nicole
Hi, I am in a public library. I work as a reference librarian in the science and technology section and we use encyclopedias, books on food families, food processsing etcetera to find this type of information. According to the Foods and Food Production Encyclopedia coconut is of the family Palmaceae (palm family) and is a fruit. My allergist tests separately for coconut and does not routinely test for coconut unless there are other fruit or palm allergies. I asked her about this because the school asked me and she told me that it is a common misconception that coconut and nutmeg are tree nuts. She said she's even had family doctors question her about it when their patients have reported back to them regarding her information. I hope this helps. It would be nice for you to have one less thing to look for on labels. My son and brother are severely allergic to peanuts and tree nuts and both eat and enjoy coconut.
Hope this helps and I'm curious about how this story will turn out for your child. Take care. Stay in touch.
Kathryn ~
You're a doll for taking so much of your time to respond to my situation. I certainly appreciate this information and will be in contact with my allergist. You are right, having one less this to watch for would be welcome here!
Nicole
Hope this helps--but my children are peanut and tree nut allergic, but can both safely eat coconut and nutmeg. PS The above letter from the reference librarian is great!
Hi Donnamarie ~
Have your children been tested for coconut and nutmeg?
Nicole
Please be careful, my daughter tested positive for peanuts, soy, peas, tree nuts and coconuts.
Thanks for your caution MaryLynn and your interest. It's obviously a case by case thing isn't it?
Nicole
