Peeps - contain soy this year?

Found white Halloween Peeps tonite, began to load up on packages when I noticed "soy protein" on the ingredients. Is this new? We had Peeps white bunnies last year at Easter and I know DH and I read the label a million times and there was no soy listed.
Have an e-mail in to the company and will post what I find out.

Oh, brother! Why would they fool with the recipe? I've always bought Peeps - my son has a soy allergy, and while he's OK with soybean oil, I avoid anything that says "soy protein". Do let us know what you hear.

I just bought a package of the Peeps pumpkins yesterday and soy protein is listed as an ingredient on those as well.

I remember noticing soy on the ingredients list last year or earlier this year. I don't eat them anyway (gelatin), but sometimes I like to have safe-for-me snacks for non-vegetarian friends to have.

My sister and I both got the same response when we called JustBorn, here is the info I am going by. They quit using soy in December 2002, however they are using up the old packaging (Easter PEEPS are different and indeed were safe last year). On the off chance that there is still old product around I was told to look at the 8 digit number on the side of the package, if it begins with a 3 or 4 it DOES NOT contain soy, if it begins with a 1 or 2 it DOES contain soy (and it's old so I wouldn't buy it anyways.) Bought 15 packs of the white ghosts with the code starting in 4 at Wegman's tonite, the kids will be so happy.

wendysco, thanks so much for the information I'll be on the lookout for those old packages (ew, 2 year old Peeps!) Glad to know I don't have to cross these off our safe list, ds really loves anything with marshmallow.
