Hello. I am new to the PA community. I have an 11 month old who has had uncontrollable eczema since she was 1 year old. Traditional treatments did not help and so she was placed on Protopic which helped for a while before the eczema would come back in full force. I work for a physician who has a son with food allergies and she mentioned that Kaleigh's formula (enfamil lipil) could be the problem. So we had her tested for food allergies. The skin tests were performed which all came back negative. She did react to the peanut one but not enough for them to call it a positive. They told us to feed her whatever we wanted. I just didn't trust those results and even when I questioned them about the nurse telling me that sometimes in babies as young as mine the results are not always accurate, I was given the brush off that she really didn't mean to say that. Well my husband and I decided to put her on Soy formula anyway to see if she tolerated it better and she does. She still has eczema but we are able to control it now when we could not before. We also decided to avoid the main foods kids develop allergies to, i.e. egg, nuts, dairy, etc. despite what the results were. Well the day after Christmas when my mom came down she ended up feeding Kaleigh egg from a biscuit we had brought earlier. About 1/2 hour later Kaleigh starts with this gaggy cough and it never crossed my mind that she was reacting to the egg. She also did not seem to be her usual happy self and I though that she may have been coming down with a cold. We left the house and went to the store when my husband brought her in to me 5 mins later and showed me that Kaleigh had begun to break out in hives. Her eye was swelling. Two knots had begun to form on her forehead and she was wheezing. I called the doctor and they gave her Benadryl which worked quickly and told us to see the food allergist again. Well even at this appointment I felt as if they were not listening to what I was telling them. They acted as though because she did not throw up or stop breathing that it was serious enough for their time. Then they dwelt on the issue of her skin again which wasn't even the purpose of our visit. Blood was drawn to test her for milk, egg and peanut allergy. Luckily working for a hospital I had access to the results. The milk was negative. The egg was a class 3 positive with range being 3.51-17.5 and Kaleigh's was 5.99. The peanut was a class 2 positive with range being 0.71-3.50 and Kaleigh's being 3.34. Well I still called the doctor's office for confirmation and they told me that her peanut was negative. I could not believe it. I am looking right at the results and it has peanut as positive. It states that a class 0 is negative and her is class 2. I don't understand their reasoning. I mean does she have to have a near death experience before they realize she does have an allergy. We are avoiding peanuts anyway, but I would appreciate any thoughts.
