Take a deep breath. =) No, really, though. It IS a scary allergy to manage, and it's especially pertrifying just after a bad reaction. It *will* get better, though. The allergy itself may not, of course, but the management and the fear will.
Matthew had his first reaction at 6mo, his first anaphylactic at 10mo. Those are the only two we *know* were caused by peanuts. We've been PA aware (i.e. understanding what all it entails and just how serious it is) since he was 2yr. He's 3.5yr now and it *is* easier.
The fear that he will somehow come in contact with peanuts and have a bad reaction is still there, but it's not the overpowering force that it used to be.
Take one day at a time. Try to minimize the risks for that one day, and when you get through that one day safely, give yourself a big pat on the back and be thankful. =) Then focus on the next day. Pretty soon you will have fallen in to a comfortable routine. One that satisifies your own comfort zone, and keeps your son safe.
Managing the peanut allergy has truly become "just a routine" for me at this point. I don't even actively think about it most of the time. When a new situation comes up, the PA comes back to the front of my mind so that I can think about how best to deal with that situation...how to prepare and how to keep Matt safe...but on the whole, PA has become just another part of our lives.
I'm sorry to hear of your son's reaction. Welcome to our "club", the one we all wish we weren't members of! My best advice goes with what MattsMom said: try to breathe and relax. Do whatever you need to do to feel safe at this time. Just take it one day at a time. The good news is that at 13 months your son should be O.K. on a rather limited diet. So, just go with the foods that you know are safe, for now. Don't introduce anything new until you feel ready. I had terrible anxiety regarding my daughter's allergies for a long time. I am doing a lot better these days. She is 7 1/2 now. It is very bizarre to discover that your child could die from something that for most people is just a very common and very delicious food. It takes time to get used to this idea. I'm glad you found this site. I'm sure it will help you get through the difficult times ahead. Sometimes I've read things here that have actually increased my anxiety - when I've discovered that many other posters have a tighter "comfort zone" about a certain product or activity, for example, than I do. But then I've had to step back and realize that I have kept my daughter safe all these years by following my own common sense. So, over time you will develop your own comfort zone. Good luck!
Thanks for the great advise everyone. I am trying to just get through one day at a time like you said and so far it is working.With everyday my anxiety lessens a little. Can anyone give me some examples of foods of places we should avoid when eating out? Thanks.
Check out the resturant board on this site for lots of eating out info. Also in general avoid Chinese, Thai etc... resturants as they frequently use peanuts and cold pressed peanut oil. Most of us also avoid or are very cautious about eating bakery goods, ice creams and desserts at resturants.
