TORONTO, May 14, 2001 (Canada NewsWire via COMTEX) -- Nestl De Canada is pleased to announce that it will continue to manufacture Nestl De Smarties, Aero, Kit Kat, Coffee Crisp and Mirage in a peanut/nut-free environment. This reverses a previously announced plan to cease production of these products in a peanut/nut-free environment as of January of next year.
"We have been truly overwhelmed by the emotional chord that our original decision struck with consumers," said Graham Lute, Senior Vice-President, Nestl De Canada. "Since our announcement three weeks ago, we have received several thousand letters, phone calls and email messages from Canadians, with and without peanut/nut allergies, asking us to reconsider our position. We've read every email and letter. We've listened to consumers and moved quickly to reverse our original decision. We will pursue other options to satisfy the growing segment of consumers who want peanut/nut chocolate products."
"We realize that consumers need choice and we have tried to be both responsive and responsible in meeting this need," Lute added. "With this decision, we remain the only national confectionery company to provide a variety of popular chocolate products manufactured in a peanut/nut-free environment."
"Peanut and nut allergies are a growing concern," said Dr. Susan Wasserman, Allergist, Clinical Immunologist, McMaster University, The Firestone Chest and Allergy Unit at St. Joseph's Hospital, Hamilton. "People with this type of condition face limited choices. So do teachers, parents and friends living or working with allergic individuals. They have to be careful too. I commend Nestl De's efforts to provide allergic adults and children with viable options."
The company's decision is effective immediately. However, because Nestl De's original intent was to allow peanut/nuts into its factory by January of next year, it had to begin changing its packaging much sooner, to give consumers advance notice. As a result, an allergy alert will temporarily appear on a limited number of product packages now in stores. The company is in the process of producing new packaging.
"We want to reassure Canadians that these products were manufactured in a peanut/nut-free environment and do not contain peanuts or nuts," said Lute. "We invite consumers to visit our web site at www.nestle.ca or call us at 1-800-387-4636, if they have any concerns or questions."
To ensure that Nestl De Smarties, Aero, Kit Kat, Coffee Crisp and Mirage are manufactured in an environment free of peanuts and nuts, Nestl De Canada follows rigorous quality standards.
Nestl De Canada Inc. is known for brands such as KitKat, Stouffer's, Nescaf De, Legend and Parlour ice cream, Carnation and Friskies. The company employs over 4,000 across Canada and has sales in excess of $1.6 billion annually; making it one of the largest value-added food manufacturing companies in Canada.

This is great news,I just read the paper and was nearly in tears myself. The kids in my son's class are all writing a thank-you letter to Nestle's. Great work everybody!!
I would like to thank every one on this web site that worked really hard to maake sure our voices were heard.
Fantastic!!!!
People are still calling me in disbelief over what has become a true people power victory!
Friends and collegues, who wrote to Nestle as per our request, are calling to congradulate us (i have been congradulating them in turn) for the unbelievable reversal by Nestle. They tell me they didnt really think it would help, that it was a lost cause (even though they wrote anyway), and happily shocked!
Today, we brought a thank you note and safe Nestle treat to each of Amanda'a SK class who each wrote a note to Nestle! Her teacher hadnt heard the good news and was equally shocked and delightfully surprised at the news! What a lesson to all the children who wrote in to plead for change...and it worked!
Impressed by Nestle's response. In the Tor. Start today, columnist E. Tishler wrote that "...Nestle went even further, flying in executives from Swiss head office to read the letters from the children.."
Big smiles over here.
I sent another thank you note to Nestle last night, and my wife called today to thank them! Way to go Nestle...Way to go everyone who wrote/called/emailed!
Robert
I just got this e-mail from them:
I am pleased to inform you that Nestl
I got the same e-mail. I think it is great that they actually kept track of who sent an e-mail in and followed through on this response.

Cindy,
I'm glad to see people like you & everyone on this chat trying to make headway with Nestle'. Do you ever feel like you're just banging your head on a fortre$$ door?
Your biggest weapon is your purchasing power! Forget about contacting Nestle'. Don't buy their products!!!Let them know why. Buy other juices instead of Juicy Juice if you are on WIC. Not even if they put it on sale. What power you have! Drink H2O. (4C)children (8C)adults.
Those of you with PA who receive WIC nutrition edu. & foods have beans as an alternative to the peanut butter. Watch out that you or your child(ren) aren't allergic to the dries peas. You might even contact your WIC state office to try to get them to work on offering an almond butter or other alternative to PB.
I just had more allergy tests & discovered I'm not only allergic to bovine milk & meat and wheat proteins but, PB & peas. My PA doesn't send me into anaphylaxtic shock, just makes my asthma worse. Inflammation is inflammation!
By BOYCOTTING NESTLE' PRODUCTS The World's Lactation consultants & other healthcare providers have been trying to stop the company's unscrupulous methods of flooding the third world countries with their artificial baby milk (formula). Many of these infants die from allergic reactions, poor dilution practices, poor sanitation, no money to buy more when their freebies run out and their breastmilk has dried up, etc.
A group of 'Mothers' of Childrens with Food Allergies' here in MA, USA have all noticed that their babies hiccupped in utero & while breastfeeding when the mother ingested a food their baby was found to be allergic to. The same thing happens when their baby receives a formula later found to contain an allergen. (I have 'a' hiccup when I eat bread to which I have added the wheat protein, gluten.)
If you have food allergies in your family's history, eliminate the foods from your diet when you are pregnant or breastfeeding so your baby won't become sensitized while his/her immunine system is turned down low. Breastfeeding (the high lactoferrin in the colostrum) turns on the infants' immune system & improves it till the child developes his/her own adult-like immunities around 5-6 years. The longer you BF before you introduce potential food allergens to the babies' diet, the less allergies. Breast milk has immugobulins to bind foreign proteins to prevent entry into the circulartory system through the stomach. Babies naturally develop this ability anywhere between the ages of 5-9 months I read somewhere.
Best nutrition,
Phyllis
