Thank you for your question. Introducing a child to new food can be stressful, especially when that child has known allergies. But there are a few steps you can take to make this situation a little less worrisome.
The best thing to do is talk with your doctor and set up a plan. From there, keep a careful eye on your child as he/she tries new foods. Generally speaking, you should let three to five days between each new food tasting. Watch your child closely during this time for any symptoms of an allergic reaction. Find out more about introducing foods here.
It also helps to know which foods might trigger a reaction and be prepared. While it’s not possible to predict every food that might cause a reaction, there has been some research that might help. Some of the most common fruits that can cause allergic reactions include apples, kiwi, tomatoes, strawberries, limes and lemons. Find out more about which fruits might cause allergic reactions here.
In addition, some doctor warn against introducing foods during a young age. For example, most pediatricians recommend waiting to give toddlers and young children peanut butter, fish, tree nuts, and other foods known to cause food allergies until the child is a little older. It’s also important to know that some foods can cause symptoms that aren’t anaphylaxis. These include hives, a rash, wheezing, vomiting and diarrhea. Again, it’s best to consult with your doctor about what plan of action to adapt. Learn more about these symptoms and pediatrician recommendations here.
