pMy sweet, 9 year old PA daughter is currently performing in her 1st professional theatre production in Chicago. (She plays "Baby June" in Gypsy). Anyway, on the very first day of rehearsals, the director made it clear to the entire cast about the severity of her allergy, and asked the actors not to bring anything with peanut into the dressing room. (My daughter has to hold hands with several of the actors at different times during the show). Now, these are all adults in the show (except for a couple of kids), and I cannot tell you how many times I have found boxes of cookies, trail mix, peanut candies, or brownies in the dressing room. Once, I freaked out and said something to the stage manager and his reaction was, "Oh, poor thing, if these foods are here, then she'll be tempted to eat them?" He didn't have a clue about cross-contamination, even after I explained it several times. Lucklily, my daughter is like a hawk when it comes to peanuts in the vicinity and she isn't afraid to speak up. She won't touch anyone until they wash their hands. But, I just wish people would get it./p

Sorry about the situation, but good for you for raising a daughter who is cautious and not afraid to speak up. Keep up the good work!

Hi Tina, for some reason the stage manager's comments really upset me. I guess it is just from ignorance but it's terrible that you tried so hard to educate him and he still just didn't get it. It's also really too bad that people are still bringing unsafe foods into the dressing room. I am so glad that your daughter is so aware and is working hard to keep herself safe.
Take care, Miriam
