I spoke with Laurensmom last week, and we are planning another online meeting this Friday, November 14 at 9:30 EST. We will be continuing our discussion about labeling and ways to expidite the Food Allergen Protection Act- the more people we can get involved, the faster the Act will be passed. Hope to see you all there.

This is kind of "sideways" to the topic- two representatives emailed me back and said that the bill never made it to the floor and both insinuated it was dead and would see no action. Has anyone heard this?

Paula,

It is true that the Food Allergen Labeling and Consumer Protection Act (FALCPA) has not yet been re-introduced.

Tactics have changed this time around. The Food industry lobby has consistently found ways to kill the previous attempts at legislation. This time around, the reason for the "call to action" now is to discuss this with members of Congress before it gets re-introduced.

By educating and gaining support prior to its introduction, the hope is to get a quick vote and push it through this time around.

I will try to make it, however the time difference unfortunately will decide whether I will make it (mountain time and near two toddlers bedtimes). If I don't make it count me in to do whatever is necessary to get this bill passed! Which two representatives said it was "dead?"

I'll try to be there, though that's bed time at my house.

The two reps I have heard from said that they would support it if it came up again. They are Richard Burr (r-NC, House), and John Edwards (d- NC- Senate). John Edwards is pursuing the Democratic nomination. I think Burr is on the Health subcommittee of the House.

For those who can't come because of the earlier time, please try to come a little later if possible. 10pm was proving just a little rough for me as everyone has been sick (thought we were getting better but alas!)

Anyway, will do my best to post the "minutes" afterwards, but if you get a chance, pop in. Depending on the participation and availability, we might still be there.

I have a question about food labeling. We all rely on the information on labels to be accurate, as it could be a matter of life or death for highly allergic individuals. I do not know a lot about the labeling laws. one thing that has crossed my mind is, does anyone ever worry that the manufacturers will just start putting the May Contain or Processed in... labels on all their packaging just to play it safe? I have noticed that these statements are continuing to appear on products that i have previously purchased and there was no disclaimer.
