DD was thrilled when the Quaker nut-free granola bars made it to our house. They have been a staple on my shelf (for the whole family), with the preference given to the choc.chip (kids) and the Rocky Road (me!).

This past weekend, DD tells me her throat is itchy, like she's eaten something she shouldn't have. She thinks it's the coconut in the granola bars. As per many things lately, coconut is something she's never been bothered by before.

DD has been taking Benadryl regularly for the last few days, throat is still a little bothersome, but she says she's okay.

Now she's getting more worried, in the last 6 or 8 months, she's reacted to peanuts, macadamia nuts, coconut? , tested + to pistachio and cashews as well, and lost most of the few reamining raw fruits/veggies (OAS) that she could eat.

I was hoping that she's had the fruit ones, and maybe it was the dehydrated apple bits that were bothering her, but no, she'd had the choc. chip ones.

She's now wondering 'what's next?'. Me too.

i know where you are coming from -- my son is allergic to peanuts and treenuts and at age 5 positive to coconut, cantaloupe, carrots, strawberries, bananas, soy and corn
we too, wonder what is next...each time he complains of an itchy mouth or throat after eating we right down the item and wait until the next round of testing -- the other night it was watermelon -- he said "mom it tastes good in my mouth but makes my throat itch I don't want anymore"
my husband looked at me and mouthed "whats next?"
my son is just about 6 and will enter kdg this fall.

"What's Next" is always my concern as well.
For me, it started with my favorite fruit-at-the-time, bananas, at age 9. Didn't worry about anything else for a few years. Then at age 14, they all started to roll in, one by one.
14, it was strawberries. That sucked, since we had a strawberry farm in our village (lived over in Germany at the time), and I couldn't even go with everyone to pick the strawberries - the oils and such from the plants would cause reactions in my skin.
17-18 is when the majority of the rest of the allergies came to be known. I had noticed over the years that I would have small problems with various fruits and vegetables, but just figured that there was something in the air, or it was the neighbor's dog, or something causing me to have difficulties.
It wasn't until senior year, I was sitting in my math class, eating some pistacios, minding my own business. I started to get itchy, but didn't think anything of it (I live in a dry climate, was probably just dry skin...). I got to gym class, and was having some difficulty breathing -- naw, it must have just been from the exercise, right? It wasn't until I was changing back into my regular clothes, that I looked in a mirror and saw my face and body covered in this mini-raised bump.
I borrowed some make up from one of my friends -- After all, we were just about to head out to the quad to meet up with the group, including a couple guys I had a crush on...Couldn't have them thinking that I was breaking out in acne -- I had never had a problem with it before, so I was feeling very anxious about it.
Finally, my lips started swelling too, I started having itchy throat and gums. I went to the office, instead of to my next class. There, I called my father (Physician assistant) to determine what to do. He brought me some benedryl and instructed me to use my inhaler. I had some projects due that day, so I insisted that I wanted to stay at school. By about lunch, I checked myself out and drove home (very carefully -- plus I only lived like 2 blocks from the school).
We determined it was the pistacios, so I cut those out of my diet. The following week, I started having a problem reacting to something else. It ended up that I was coming up with some kind of reaction every couple of weeks.
My dad made me an appointment with the allergist. I explained all of what was happening, and gave her a list of the foods I had eaten during those few weeks.
She tested me positive for so many different things. She had started to write me a list of what to avoid on a post it note. That post it note was filled and a 2nd and 3rd note were also used.
As I was sitting in a back hallway with my best friend, eating a bland ham sandwich, I asked, "What's next?" For a while, after all of the allergy tests and still continuing problems, I was scared to eat any of my favorite foods, knowing that those would soon be on the list of "can't haves."
The most recently added items are shellfish (added in 1999) and Latex (2000).
The past few days I've been having some severe reactions, and the only thing that has been the same in all of them is chicken. I hope that it's just the brand that we got, and not all chicken, as chicken is one of the staples of mine & my family's diets (My sister can't eat beef...)
I just know that the day I am told I can't eat chocolate, the world will end. That's for sure.

I can't imagine what DD would do if she became allergic to chocolate!
Much as I would NEVER wish a serious reaction on her, if it was going to happen, I hope it would be enough to convince her.
She will still chance the odd 'may contain', or the cookie flavour that's beside the ones she can't have (and picked up with the same tongs).
I guess all we can do is wait. And try to be careful.

It's nice to know for once it's not just us...though I'm sorry that it is happening to y'all too!
DS went for his allergy test nearly a year ago and tested positive for wheat, soy, egg and peanut. We were told, he would outgrow all of his allergies (with the exception of peanut) by the age of two. Shortly thereafter we discovered he was allergic to barley. In the last month though we have had a few reactions - we are thinking MSG and sulfites, maybe vinegar...I really hate the guessing game. He is just short of 17 months old. In the back of my head, I'm thinking there is not a chance he is ever going to outgrow these and to be honest, what next? Sure, there are benefits - one of the healthiest kids out there, never eats fast food, loves his fruits and veggies (he gets so excited when he sees green beans he practically hyperventilates) but are we doomed to packing a meal for him anytime we go out?
Sorry to vent - but thank god for a forum that allows me to do so!
