I know this isn't peanut related but I know you woman know your stuff so I thought I'd ask...

My peanut/tree nut allergic 21 month old son also has a vanilla allergy that we just recently discovered. I am trying to contact different manufacturers to see if their products are safe for him or not because it has come to my attention that vanilla is often included under "natural flavorings" and isn't listed seperately. Well, several manufacturers are now telling me that they aren't required to report or keep records of anything other than the top 8 allergens so they can't help me. I am confused... shouldn't there be a list SOMEWHERE of what goes into their products??

Now what can I do... if anything???

In my opinion and experience, this is true. One of my child's allergies is not in the "8 major" so I've run into similar problems. For instance, for Pepperidge Farm Gold Fish, their recipe for "spices" and "natural flavorings" are proprietary information. They will not disclose. What is funny is that they are a member of FAAN! I avoid this company.
There ARE companies that will disclose this information. For instance, Nestle, ConAgra, Kraft to name a few. If they do not have the information available while I'm on the call, they will forward it for reseach and someone will get back to me in about a week. There are companies that will tell us, we just have to find them. Good luck.

How did you determine your hcild is allerigc to vanilla?
Did you RAST? Did you SPT? I'd accept those, but nothing else...
If an oral challenge? Was it pure vanilla? Some Vanilla extract contains gluten.
Was it mixed in with a cake mix? Maybe its something else...

My daughter also has an allergy that isn't in the big 8. It is tough to get information from some companies. General Mills was very good as far as giving me additional information.

It is true that they do not have to disclose all ingredients. People dealing with onion or garlic allergies have a difficult (impossible?) chore finding out if something is safe for them.
Wanted to point out that a lot of *vanilla* is actually artificial. It might be worth checking out whether or not there is any real vanilla in the artificial vanilla.

It was a SPT... I had NO IDEA! Although in hindsite it made sense honestly. He has ALWAYS reacted to ice cream... even homemade. I always assumed it was somehow a peanut cross contamination issue but it was probably the vanilla. The hive from the SPT for vanilla was the same size as the one for peanuts and quite large!! I was floored. I didn't even know you could be allergic to vanilla.
We were told to avoid all vanilla and vanillin since there is no way of knowing which is completely synthetic and which is derived from a vanilla bean (some vanillin is completely chemical based and some is made from vanilla beans).
