I think so, based on how this vaccine is supposed to work. The information I have received was that it isn't actually a vaccine against the peanut protein but against the allergic response to anything one is allergic to...including dust mites, dogs, etc. HTH Kristi

I just got back from my sons allergist and we had a long talk about this new vaccine. It is supposed to be available within the next 6 months. It is administered once a month and will stop an anaphalatic reation from occuring. It doesn't give you permission to eat the offending food, it is in case you accidently have an exposure. It will only be available to people who have had previous ana-reactions. It is a bioengineered moleculer vaccine. I asked if it was like a anti venom for snake bit you know because it is actually made out of the venom and it is not. It is a bioengineered vaccine. It works on all things that cause an ana-reation, tree nute, peanuts, beestings etc. YAY!!!!!

LiveForHim, will you return to this thread and report when/if this vacine is available?
We are in Canada and our allergist said it would be a few years (that was last year when I spoke to him).
I'm thinking if it becomes available in the US we would take a road trip once a month, we are in southern BC so Washington is not very far.

Sure, I will return and let you know anything new on it. I just got this info Saturday from the allergist and she sounded very optimistic about it. I take my son back in a couple weeks and I will ask about any new info then also.

Live4him- do you know where they are working on the vaccine (which university/hospital/State)- this is the first I have heard on anything like this! Please do keep us updated.
Also did your allergist have any idea if the person getting the vaccine would have to be a certain age- say over 6 yrs or so? Thanks!

I didnt ask where it is being done at, but I will add that question to my list when we go back there. As far as the age thing goes, It didnt sound like there was a certain age you had to be as we were talking of my 14 yr old son getting it and he is only 100 lbs.. The way it sounded was like it will come in doses, like measured in cc's according to weight, maybe like the epi pen and epi jr.. BUT, I cant say for sure. I do know that the patient will get the vaccine every month, thats a sure thing. I was kinda reluctant at first but when she explained that it is not from peanut protien that made me feel relieved. If anyone has any questions I will keep a log and ask when I go back on March 12th.

Was your allergist referring to Xolair?

I don't think so, Xolair has been out for a few years, this is a new vaccine that isn't available yet. I don't believe it is for wheezing with athsma etc but to stop the reaction from food allergy. I'll ask though.

I should tell you that on Feb 21st of this year the FDA requested that the manufacturer of Xolair put a warning on the box stating that Xolair may cause anaphalaxis in patients with asthma related to allergies. I doubt after hearing this that Xolair is the same as the new vaccine. Hopefully the new vaccine wont have any potentially harmful side effects
