I just read something in "Offspring" magazine that said there may be a monthly shot available in the future that will neutralize the reaction. Wouldn't that be wonderful??? My mom has a strong peanut allergy, even extending into food families, like peas. Growing up and watching her reactions and her needing a shot to breathe again when anything peanut got into her food was very scary. I will be thrilled to see this development! Keep up on it's progress!
It's not really a vaccine, but an anti-IgE injection taken monthly. The injected substance de-activates the immunoglobulin E (IgE) that causes allergic responses in the body. It will be effective for all allergies, not just peanut. They're currently testing these monthly shots in New York, Boston, Arkansas, and Denver and they're doing the testing on PA adults. The trial period for each participant is 6 months, but the injections will continue to be offered to all participants until the drug gets FDA approval.
I called Dr. Sampson at Mt. Siani in NY to inquire about participating in the study and his nurse gave me the above information. Unfortunately, I'm in TX and unless I can find a way to get to any of the study sites something like 19 times, I can't participate.
