Help with new allergies

I posted about a reaction that landed my son in the ER on the reaction board. I wanted to get help from you who's children also have sesame and sunflower seed allergies in addition to peanut and nut. What should we avoid now?

I hate these allergies so much. I am at work right now and it's all I can do to keep myself together. We thought he was doing well, outgrowing his allergies since his nut numbers are lowering, it is such a blow to find out that he is getting new allergies.

Hi there. I'm sorry your son has new allergies. I know that can be upsetting. My son first had PA then came TNA and then sesame/poppy/and sunflower. There is sunflower oil in some packaged products. My son felt it on the Tostitos corn chips. He started to put in in his mouth and quickly pulled it away. Doctor suspected sunflower oil. He used to eat other potato chips with it and was fine now we stay away.
I've noticed sunflower oil is in many cheese crackers or cheese snacks. Also in almost all potato chips. In some cookies too. I almost bought Sunsweet craisins the other day and noticed that the dried cranberries contained sunflower oil. I put it back.
I don't give any bread or bakery products to my son. They are all contaminated with seeds. The only ones so far but I have to call them again is Arnold stoneground wholewheat bread in the orangy/brownish plastic packaging and Thomas's English Muffins. I have been told that these are processed separately then their other breads with seeds. I called a while ago and plan to call again as my son keeps asking me for the wholewheat bread.
I started baking my own bread. It's time consuming so I bought a bread machine. I have a good recipe (not bread machine though) for dinner rolls that you can shape them for hot dog buns or hamburger buns too. Let me know and I will post it if you are interested.
Also stay away from anything breaded like meatballs, or eggplant parmesean, chicken, etc. at a restaurant and packaged breadcrumbs as they contain seeds. I use Corn Flake crumbs for breading and it works well, it's nice and crispy.
Some pizzerias use sesame seeds on their pizza or sandwhiches. I worry about them using the same cutter and touching seeds and then touching dough, and also that seeds are so small that it's so easy for them to stick to or fall in other places.
Read ingrediants on everything and stick to the brands that you know and trust. Chinese food uses sesame oil too.
I give my son:
Nabisco (some people stay away from Nabisco) teddy grahams, nilla wafers and plain or whole wheat Ritz crackers. Also the saltines are fine.
Keebler cookies(read the ingrediants).
Most companies including bread companies do not list for seeds.
My son also eats Nathans regular beef skinless hotdogs plain with ketchup (Heintz).
Wendy's chicken nuggets and fries(I don't give him anything with buns or bread). We don't go to McDonalds or Burger King because of seeds. He also reacts on contact.
If we go to the diner he gets a plain hamburger or pancakes. No more chicken fingers for us (breading). When we go to a restaurant to eat he orders pasta with tomato sauce. Sometimes ravioli.
Tyson frozen chicken nuggets in the box. I have called them each time because they change their ingrediants and only list veg. oil. on the box and so far those have been o.k. Last time I called they used corn oil and soy oil.
There are quite a few people here that have children with this allergy, hopefully more will respond. It does get easier once you find more options.

I'm dealing with the sesame allergy too.
[b]All bread products[/b] may contain trace amounts, unless you verify otherwise. Some Canadian companies are now starting to label for trace amounts of sesame seeds, but I'm not sure how common that is in the US.
Although I have never had a problem with it, I recall someone posting about a spaggetti sauce with sesame oil in it.

Thanks guys. It gets harder as my son not only has PA, he also has TNA and a severe egg allergy. These allergies really get me down sometimes and I am still reeling from the news we got yesterday. Especially since I work and he's home with the nanny during the day. I started to go through the cupboards last night to read all the ingredients again but I was exhausted and didn't finish. These latest two have me worried as I don't often see them listed in things like bread when it's obvious they are in there (you can see the seeds for example).

Sorry, I didn't realize that your son has egg allergy too. That's hard too because I'm not sure all companies list for that. It's hard with bread with the seeds because they can be contaminated with traces of seeds. The list of foods I mentioned above are o.k. for PA/TNA and seed allergy but I'm not sure about egg.
It's good you are reading all ingrediant lists again. I've remember doing this when my son became allergic to seeds. But you rarely find seeds in the ingrediants, especially bread. I would not give him any bread/breadsticks/breadcrumbs (made from bread)/ cookies from the supermarket bakery (the ones in the plastic containers) they have labels but not always list for traces of peanuts/tree nuts/seeds (some breads have egg too)/breadsticks and certain brands of crackers (like the ones that are fancy with seeds, black pepper, herbs unless you call the company) I think there is a brand Carr I don't give them to my son anymore because they don't list traces of seeds and I feel that the plain ones may be contaminated. Sesame is tricky because companies don't label for them as traces. You may find them in ingrediants but not if there are traces. They may list these in the future, especially egg (which I see on pasta) because these allergies are more common now. Another thing because some people will take a plain loaf of bread to give to my son and tell me it has no seeds (they must think I'm blind) and I turn it over and show them all the little sesame seeds under the bread that stick to the bottom of the plain bread because they are made in the same place.
Hugs. I know it's tough especially with egg and sesame. You will find out your list of safe food and things will get easier.

Do you have a bread machine? If not, then get one.
For about 10 years, I couldn't find any safe bread products. It's gotten easier the last few years, but I still can't find safe hotdog/hamburger buns. (Actually, there was a safe brand, but they moved it to a different facility and now has a *may contain* warning. [img]http://uumor.pair.com/nutalle2/peanutallergy/mad.gif[/img] )

I just remembered, read everything. I noticed chocolate milk that had sunflower oil in the ingrediants. I don't remember the brand.
