I got this remarkable information today from CSPI. I think it would be wonderful to engage some parents who want to improve all the food consumed at school. and are concerned about the epidemic of childhood obesity. By attacking these issues w/broad support, it would be less likely to be cast aside as "the parents are just pushing these issues just due to food allergies".

If you look at some of the components of the model policies, there a loads of things here that, if implemented, really would make the accommodation discussions a whole lot easier.

For example, if you look here http://www.schoolwellnesspolicies.org/WellnessPolicies.html#quality, under:

- Sharing of Food and Beverages - don't do it (with reference to food allergies)
- Fundraising activities - don't sell candy (sell something nutritious instead)
- Rewards - don't use food as rewards/punishment
- Celebrations - LIMIT celebrations to no more than once/mo and do healthy things!!!

This is an extremely exciting development. Many of us have discussed in the past that the food situation is out of control in our schools.

So, here's your chance to make a difference. Bring this up to your local PTA or other parent organizations, bring it to the attention of your school boards....get people talking and taking action on this.

Not only will our kids have a healthier environment, but the silver lining is that for PA kids, we can collectively 'reduce the risk'. It makes the list of items with which to engage the school a little bit shorter!!!
