Long story short in case you didn't read my pumpkin seed allergy post, and if I can ask for advice again please.
Sunday ds ate pumpkin seeds I roasted, allergy began, cough, asthma, hives.
He is fine for awhile, then it returns full blown. Had him at the er last night, he recovered on his own there because apparantly even a stroke victim couldn't get in last night. 2 doctors and 2 critical patients, everyone else was on their own. Scary, but he was ok and we finally came home after a few hours there.
He was fine all night, then after breakfast, asthma cough and hives return. Cleared again until after lunch, now after supper.
Everytime he's eating he's reacting. Nothing he hasn't eaten his whole life.
It's almost as if as soon as he ate those seeds now he is allergic to all foods.
I talked with his allergist today, he said to keep giving benadryl and puffers and have epi ready and call tomorrow or next day. He's 3 hours from my home.
This sucks, any ideas????
Thanks so much
Have a safe halloween
Linda
Linda,
I don't have anything helpful to say. But I will tell you I had a similar experience with my daughter. She had a very severe hive reaction that covered her entire body. The hives were so large they didn't look like hives. It took several days, Zrytex and extra nebulizer treatments to get through it.
At first we treated her with benadryl. But as soon as it wore off she was covered again. The Zrytex gave her more time between reactions - but the bottom line was it took almost a week to be out of her system.
Don't know if that helps at all. We still have no idea what caused the reaction - Dr said we probably never will. But it was one reaction that just took what seemed like forever to work out of her system.

Yes, sometimes when I have a reaction, I can feel the symptoms returning just when the Benadryl begins to wear off....like clockwork. I start off having to re-dose about every 5 hrs for several days, with it gradually getting better about the third day.
When the stuff if still going through your system, it keeps cropping back up. Has your Doc ever suggested something like Orapred? You could ask when you call back. Steroids are sometimes used for preventing rebounding.
Take care,
Daisy
Thanks for the replys. being more hopeful now this will work thru his system soon. There is one new allergist in town here, we just love our dr. and their office is so awesome it's worth the drive. But definately a pain in the butt when things like this arise.
I have never had such a good doctor. We may just have to move closer to him!!!!
Thanks so much, hoping tomorrow for an allergy free day.
Linda
When my kids have had ingestion reactions, the hives will keep coming back for days, sometimes up to a week.

Mom to 7 yr old PA/TNA daughter and 3 1/2 yr old son who is allergic to eggs.
Pumpkin seeds! ACK! My only known allergy (except hayfever) and it is very severe. Also it was adult onset. Every Halloween we carve pumpkins and roast pumpkin seeds. About 5 or 6 years ago (or thereabouts) I started feeling a bit quesy, a bit uneasy after eating them. Now you would think given all my eldest's allergies I would have clued in but I didn't.
So next year, feeling worse, worse again the next year. STILL I didn't wake up. Then year before last I ate a couple and immediately passed out! Luckily I responded to antihistamines. So, never again.
I always thought it was a weird allergy. I mean, allergic to nothing but pumpkin seeds?
Regarding recurring hives. Is there anyway to flush his system out a bit? Drink lots and lots of water? Probably not helpful since it's already absorbed into bloodstream but it couldn't hurt.
Barb
Iam so glad I have you guys, way less worry. This however, has set me back about 4 years in my comfort level.
Sounds terrible Barb, our allergist said he has one other patient only that is allergic to pumpkin seeds. We have to take our own seed next time for them to make the solution for the scratch test.
This seemed a worse reaction than his peanut was (come to think of it though, he never actually ate a peanut so maybe that's why)
Thanks again
Linda
Linda I have a friend allergic to Aspirin and one day she took Advil (not a good idea) and reacted. We spent hours in the ER and they told her it takes DAYS for aspirin to leave your system. She reacted on and off for more than two weeks.
Maybe that is what is happening to your son. Maybe next time ask for steroids. I always do. I say "that peanut has to digest for 48 hours and I want my son covered during that time" and they put him on a week of steroids.
Peggy
Just to add, sometimes you need a stronger antihistamine to keep the hives at bay.
My dd had a bad case of hives and we finally had to put her on Atarax ( I think that is what is was)- this really helped- but the hives have to run their course and sometimes it does take a long time to get out of your system completely- hang in there!
Did you see the Protracted Reaction thread below?
