Hello from MA, 2yo newly dx\'ed

Hi there!

I'm Becky and my DD, Gabby, is newly dx'ed with peanut, tree nut, and milk allergies (as well as dog, but that's more easilt handled :)). Since her dx a week ago, this has consumed me...I've thrown so much stuff away over the past few days and have taken pages of notes from various websites. I have a couple of questions:

1. What HIDDEN things should I look for in labels? i.e. what is not safe that desn't specifically say "peanut" or "manufactured with..."? I did find that hydrolysed vegetable protein is to be avoided.

2. What book(s) do you recommend for label reading and generally just living with this? Is the [i]Peanut Allergy Handbook[/i] any good?

I find the peanut allergy handbook to be very handy - it covers a lot of basic informtion which you will eventually learn about.

you must be soooo frustrated! I am in MA also. I know a great line of over 200 cooking products available in MA that are 100% peanut free (sauces, oils, marinades, mixes, spices, desserts, and more). I am in MA also...
I like the peanut allergy answer book. Great info.
There are new labeling laws out there that tell manufacturers that they have to disclose in plain easy to understand english if a product conatins peanut products. That is why you see so many labels that say " may contain, made inthe same facility, ect.
You mentioned Hydrolized vegitable protien: according to the PA answer book witht he new labeling laws they have to list the source of the vegetable protien. "i.e. "hydrolized soy protien". So if it is derived from peanuts it would say " hydrolized peanut protien". It also states that hyrolized peanut protien his not used in the USA very often. But if you purchase products that are manufactured over seas they do use it.

I know exactly how you feel: my daughter was diagnosed with peanut and milk allergies at age two. She's 15 now, and we've managed to survive with no major incidents (never had to use the EpiPen). It can be scary and feel overwhelming. Like I tell all new food allergy mothers, your best defenses are education and diligence: [list][*] Learn everything you can about your allergies[/*:m][*] Start teaching your child as early as possible (my daughter was policing her own food pretty well by age 4)[/*:m][*] Educate all caregivers/teachers. Get involved in all classroom parties.[/*:m][*] Read EVERY label, no matter how many times you've purchased it before -- ingredients can and do change without any warning or dramatic changes to the label design.[/*:m][*] Always ask about ingredients in restaurants (you never know when those can change, too. [/*:m][*] EpiPen: don't leave home without it.[/*:m][/list:u]
If you aren't already a member of the Food Allergy & Anaphylaxis Network (FAAN), I really recommend it: they are a fabulous resource for all food allergies.

hi, I am new to this as my daughter has just been diagnosed with peanut & Tree nut allergies. I have gotten rid of so much stuff in the three days since we found out. I did not realize that so many things I never thought of could have nuts or nut products in them. I have had to get rid of cosmetics and loations and a few other things that I never thought of. It was another mom with the same allergies told me about it. I find right now that I am scared to leave her with anyone for fear that something might happen and she would have something with nuts in it. I have barely slept and there are millions of thoughts running in my mind. I have a fear that maybe my other kids had a PB sandwich and touched the wall ( before we found out.. now all of that is out of the house) and what if she touches it.
Is it normal to be going through all of these feelings? Or am I going over board with all of the over thinking? Will things get easier? Grocery shopping seemed to take forever and when things are not clearly printed.. No nuts... should I worry about them? Any tips that anyone could give me would be great as well. My daughter is 16 months old.

Really... it DOES get better as you become more educated and fall into the new routines of always reading labels and checking your environment everywhere you go. It's sort of like starting parenting all over again: you still have a little life dependent on you, and there are still new things to learn and to watch for. Eventually, the newness and the anxiety will fade away and it will all become routine, just like when you first had her. You've made it through the first 16 months -- I'm sure you'll handle the rest of her life just fine. And with time, your daughter will learn, too, and it will get even easier.
Many allergists will tell you that just touching peanuts or nuts will not induce an allergic reaction: it's the toddler's tendency to put their hands in their mouths or rub their eyes that will do it. Because peanut allergies in infants have tripled in the last 10 years, there are many daycares and schools that are totally nut-free these days. Communicating with caregivers, teachers, and party parents in advance about your daughter's allergies will be very helpful (you'll find yourself having to educate a lot of these people yourself, because people who don't deal with food allergies have a hard time understanding them), and be prepared to take along "safe foods" for your daughter to make sure there will be something she can eat at parties and get-togethers.
There are a lot of resources (like this forum), where you can find lists of "safe" food manufacturers and restaurants as well as all the advice your brain can absorb.
