A friend has invited us over for a christmas party in a few weeks and wanted to get gingerbread houses for the kids to make. She was saying she would pick them up or we could bring them. I looked at Walmart and Michaels and the ones I have seen (besides being kind of expensive) have may contain nut warnings on them. I could not find a manifacturers name to call. Has anyone here bought one of these kits before. I am wondering if I wouldnt be better off just making some gingerbread and icing and buying some candy. It wont look as nice as the other kids but I would atleast know what is in it.

I got one at Micheal's from Wilton and there is no nut warning on it.

I bought one yesterday at our grocery story. We are actually in the process of getting it together (walls are drying)
Anyway, it's made by Wilton's and the kit comes with everything you'll need. Mind you, you don't eat this. It's purely for decoration otherwise you might break your teeth on the gingerbread--haha. The ingredients list reads a-ok.
I have used Wilton's icing, food colorings and chocolate in the past with absolutely no problems of any kind.
I paid $9.00 for this Gingerbread House kit.
Keep in mind that after assembling the walls you are supposed to let it dry for 2 to 3 hours before you start decorating it. You will most likely do most of the assembling yourself.
Have fun and enjoy!

I phoned Wilton's to double check ingredients on the Gingerbread house. The product is made in a facility with nuts, and YES THERE IS TRACES OF NUTS. When I inquired as to why there is not trace of nuts warning label, I was told a controller would have to call me back. Will let you know after I talk to them.

When I was little, we enjoyed making mini houses with graham crackers instead of gingerbread. Maybe this would be an option if you have a brand you trust of those?
Sorry I couldn't be more help...

Thanks for the input. I just talked to my friend yesterday and she wants us to bring the gingerbread houses to her house and just let the kids decorate them. So I think I will just make my own ginger bread a few days ahead with the kids and then put the house together by myself. I suggested the graham cracker ones... but she didnt sound too trilled. If they were not so expensive I might would go ahead and buy them but money is really tight right now so alas. Someone I read on line suggested you just make them from cardboard and let the kids put icing and candy on it to decorate it.
