My son is 15 years old with severe nut allergies and asthma. He handles himself very well and have never had a problem with our school. My son recently was invited to participate in the National Young Leaders State Conference for 4 days. It is a wonderful opportunity for him but he will an hour and a half away from us for four days. I called the organization that runs it and they informed me that they have dealt with food allergies for years and they are extremely careful. However, they will be staying at a hotel and all the food is buffet style. On the application, in small lettering, it does state that we cannot hold this organization responsible for any health related problems due to food allergies. My son wants to go and I want him to be rewarded for his academic achievements, but this worries me. Has anyone else dealth with this before? Thanks.

Oh boy.. This is the kind of stuff that I think about now that my son is 10. He wants to do things with out me. I am nervous about this kind of thing. But realize that I can't protect him 100% I have to let him do things for himself. How does your son feel about it? Is there any way he can bring most of his own food? I would call the Hotel. The banquet host may be able to prepare a special meal for him. I bet the hotel can help you. I would check directly with the banquet manager about food while they are there for the event.
I would let him go.
