food challenge-need opinions

26 month old DD is allergic to eggs and peanuts. We just found out less than two weeks ago. They did a RAST for the egg but we won't do any further peanut testing until age 4.

Her RAST for egg came back at 1.69. The allergist said they won't do a food challenge unless it's below 2. It was, but not by much. We have the egg challenge on Oct. 6.

DD has only ever had one reaction to eggs. It was the first time I gave it to her at 9 months old (her ped. had told me she could have it). She vomited all day. The peds. office even told me to try again in a week which I did NOT do. I did just think maybe she was too young.

I waited until she was almost 2 to let her try eggs again (though I was not avoiding baked goods with eggs, etc.). She has never had a reaction. She actually ate a scrambled egg a couple of days before learning of the allergy--no problem.

I'm just looking for opinions on this RAST score and what you make of the fact that she's not had any more reactions. Have any of your kids had food challenges with a simliar RAST result? How did it turn out?

My almost 5 year old son. grew out of his allergy to eggs.
When he was 9 months old we gave him scrambled egs. He projectile vomitted, all day. (not something you want to see with scramled eggs). We tried agin in another month the same thing. We avoided all predominently egg things, omellates, egg cassaroles. But, we didn't avoid baked goods. When he was tested at 2 with a rast test, he came back at a 2. So we just continued as we were doing. Then some where around the time he was 3 we gave him scrambled eggs and he did fine. So we continued to give him cooked eggs. When he had a new rast test this summer- when he was 4, eggs didn't even register.
I think that the actual reactions are more important of a test than the rast test. I hadn't learned that an egg allergy could be as bad as an allergy to nuts, I guess I was so concerned about the nut allergies that I didn't learn as much about eggs. Thankfully my guardian angel was watching out for my ignorance.
Maybe you could do a skin test?

Thanks Jami! That sounds familiar. When I gave DD the eggs at 9 months, she projectile vomited all day, too. I did not want to put her or myself through that again so that's why I waited almost a year before trying again.
She did have a skin test for the egg the same day she was tested for peanut. Both were a 2+. However, I'm feeling like eggs will eventually be okay just because she has not been reacting in any way (other than the first exposure).
I am avoiding eggs with the same diligence as peanuts and have removed all such items from my home. It sure would be nice to have only one allergy to stress over but we do what we must, right? Thanks again!

My 23 mo old DS is allergic to eggs and peanuts as well. Saw him react to eggs (hives) twice, first time was very mild and I wasnt really sure he had a reaction or not (splotchy around the face, but not sure what it was...he had eaten several different things and it was only around his mouth), 2nd time he got hives pretty much from head to toe, rather quickly.
That's been 13 months ago and no more reactions. He's never been given any peanut products "knowingly and intentionally", although I'm sure he's gotten ahold of some crackers that would have been off limits (before he was dx'd w/allergies). I told him to the allergist and they tested him for several things and determined he has peanut and egg allergies.
He had the RAST a few months ago, egg yellow was .87, egg white was 9.87, and peanuts as 4.79.

My son is allergic to both peanut and egg, and although I know that each situation is unique, i offer you caution about how severe an egg reaction can really be. My son rec'd 3 doses of epi to relieve his peanut reaction at 9 months old. He had been transported to ER. AT 12 months old he had another anaphylactic episode, which we thought was peanut. He had eaten Mac and cheese casserole at daycare (which contained egg). He ended up receiving epi again. Shortly thereafter I made pancakes for him. He reacted again and needed epi.
Austin had been eating egg in baby foods and cooked in baked goods without reaction. My allergist suggested we avoid all egg, since his Rast for egg white was 57.1 and yolk was 4.85. He is now 3 and has avoided peanut and egg successfully since then. I just wanted you to be aware that egg CAN cause an anaphylactic reaction also.

Since different labs have a different "normal" value for a rast or Cap rast, it is a little hard to compare the numbers with various people posting who all went to different labs. Just wondering what the normal values are for all the people who posted? My daughter who is 9 had egg for the first time at age 2 1/2. She went into anaphylaxis and I had to use the epi. She never had any eggs after that in any form. She had a cap rast at age 5, which was class 2. I don`t remember the number. Since the allergenic part of the egg is the white, the rast or cap rast for the egg white should be higher than the value for egg yolk if they are allergic. At age 9, she had another cap rast. Her result was 0.11 with normal being less than 0.10 She had a food challenge and all went well, and she has been eating egg now for two months.
