I just had a Rx filled for myself for FloVent inhaler. On the accompanying information it says:

"Before taking this medication tell your doctor or pharmacist if you are allergic to it; or to peanuts, soybean or soya lecithin, or if you have any other allergies."

Just wanted to let y'all know about this as I know many of you or your kids may have asthma as well as PA, in case your doc prescribes this.

I am a respiratory therapist and also have a 4 yr old boy with a peanut allergy.I did not know that this was on flovent. This warning has been on Atovent for a long time, also Combivent. Although I have never heard of anyone reacting to this it is good to be aware of. Many patients with a nut allergy also have other allergies and possibly asthma. Since Flovent is the most common anti-inflammotory inhaler it is interesting to see this warning on this. Since the potential allergen might be the propellant or a stabalizing agent you could ask your doctor to consider a discus or turbuhaler which the pt inhales a powder. I belive flovent is available in this form.

My daughter is on Flovent. I contacted Walgreens and the pharmacist really took his time and could not come up with this warning. It is not on the Flovent website either. I am going to contact Glaxo and see what they say.
Linda - was the paper that this statement was printed on the package insert? Or info printed out from the pharmacy? Also, what type of Flovent? 44mcg, 110 mcg, inhaler, diskus, etc. I think you said inhaler, but I thought I'd check.
Thanks!
Carolyn

I picked up my DD's prescription for Flovent (44 mcg inhalation aerosol) on 19 Nov 04, and it contained the same warning on the printout from the pharmacy.
The pediatrician told me it's because of cross reactivity issues with soy and peanuts.
My DD is soy allergic (mild allergy), but I'm still worried about using it because of the soy lecithin. DD was on it from last December thru August with no problems.

Below is a description of the ingredients in Flovent that I copied from www.rxlist.com
Note that the drug has soya lechitin in it and this may be where there is a warning.
I am allergic to peanuts and do not take any inhalers with soya lechitin in it.
The active component of FLOVENT 44 mcg Inhalation Aerosol, FLOVENT 110 mcg Inhalation Aerosol, and FLOVENT 220 mcg Inhalation Aerosol is fluticasone propionate, a glucocorticoid having the chemical name S-(fluoromethyl)6a,9-difluoro-11

I just spoke to Glaxo (maker of flovent).
It does NOT contain nuts. It used to contain soya lecithin 2-3 years ago. But now that they changed from a CFC (harmful to the invironment) to an HSA it is legume free.
WARNING: She did say that "Serevent" and "Advare" DOES have soya lecithin.
This is for Canada. I am not sure if it applies for the USA.

Hi
Thanks for re-confirming this. We went through this discussion before with the Atrovent, which also has been changed to the non-cfc propellant and no longer contains soya.
It is possible that the Advair inhaler contains soya lecithin. It is important to specify, as the Advair Diskus actually contains lactose and therefore is contra-indicated for a milk allergy but does NOT contain soya.
The specialists here at CHEO always prefer the diskus for children as clinical trials have demonstrated that it is much easier for children to take correctly.

OK, OK, so maybe Flovent has soya or not. I am still working on fact-finding regarding such, but based on other posts - it probably does not.
That being said, I wanted to share with everyone how incredibly proactive and informative the customer service at Glaxo is (dripping with sarcasm here).
Here is their response to my inquiry. Below it is my (sarcastic) response to the rep. I am weary of trying to be nice.
