Fatal Allergy

Feb 7, 2006

Food allergies kill at lease 150 people every year. It was two years ago this week when a food allergy killed a local high school student. His mother shares the story with News 19's Jessica Tighe.

"Sometimes I get this real panicky feeling that comes over me. Oh my god Chris passed, it's just unbelievable."

Chris Clements had big plans for the future. He was a smart kid, a Senior at Logan High School. He was accepted at the University of Minnesota. He planned to study bio-medical engineering. Ironically, it's a lack of knowledge his mother says cut Chris' life.

"If he would have had the knowledge that he was going through anaphylactic shock... and not just an asthma attack he could have left sooner and gotten help."

When Chris was six, his mother Jacquie found out he was allergic to treenuts. So when the family made food in the kitchen it was nuts on one side, not on the other. Chris knew if he ate nuts an asthma attack would quickly follow. What he and his family didn't know was just how severe an allergic reaction can be.

"In its most severe form it can be a life threatening reaction, troubles breathing, blood pressure changes. It can be a medical emergency, " Dr. Douglas Nelson from Franciscan Skemp said.

Two years ago this week Chris faced that medical emergency. While on a sledding trip with friends he ate a chocolate he didn't know had a hazelnut center. Later that night, his mother got a knock on the door.

"The police were standing sideways and couldn't even look at me. I didn't even realize there was a clergyman with a bible next to him. They just said there's been an accident."

Chris passed away the night. Now every morning his mother reflects at his picture and prays that other families will seek the knowledge her family didn't have.
