Just curious. I used to work for a school district as a social worker and we were constantly having in-service trainings. Has anyone ever attempted to participate in these in-service days and give all of the staff at their children's school a training about food allergies/anaphalaxis/etc.? I'm just curious because I am a SAHM who would love to work to volunteer in the community spreading the word about what our kiddos face. Any feedback or experiences would be great!

I have presented at my child's elementary school faculty meetings several times. Faculty meeting topics and presentations are usually arranged by the school principal. At bigger schools such as the middle or high schools they may have team meetings with a team leader.
I do about a 20 minute presentation including:
- information about the allergy in general (statistics etc.)
- anecdotal info about my child's reactions and what to look for
- information about the food allergy action plan
- how to use the epi-pen (they may prefer their nurse to do this)
- Then while they are all reeling from dread of the epi-pen I finish with suggestions for how to keep a peanut safe environment (craft substitutions, snack screening, hand washing)
I provide a handout in outline form with all this plus websites for more information.
It has always been well received and helped make a few forward strides.
If you would like to be involved in inservices throughout the district you might check with the head of nursing for the district. You have a great idea. I hope it works out for you.
