Well, we are finally taking my son to Duke. We are seeing Dr. Mankad next week. She works with Dr. Burks. I called for an appt for Dr. Burks but couldn't get in until May 1, so they said I could see another Dr for the 1st visit. I am nervous. What do they do at the first visit? SPT or Cap Rast?

If you don't mind me asking, how old is he and how did you go about being considered?
Please keep us up to date on how your visit goes. Good luck- I'm sure it will go fine! It sounds like a very promising study- if we didn't live so far from Duke I'd be checking on it for DD!
My ds will be 3 this weekend. I am not sure what age you have to be to participate in the study. I am really scared for him to do it. I will definetly let him do the egg desensatization, but I am truly worried about the peanut. Hopefully, they will give me some encouraging info so I can feel comfortable with it. I will definetly keep you posted on what happens
Nancy,
Good luck and feel free to ask any questions you might have...my younger DS is a patient of Dr. B's and is in the peanut study.
Melissa
I forgot to answer the first question you posted...at our first visit we did spt and RAST.
Melissa
Hi Melissa,
What did they SPT? I really don't want to find out if he has any sensativity to any other foods right now. I feel he isn't having any problems with anything but peanut. He has never had a reaction to egg. Will they SPT for everything? I saw a picture on another thread of a boy getting SPT for everything and it really freaked me out!
We only had a spt for egg and peanut, which we knew he was allergic to. There was some question about his initial spt at another allergist's office (the serum ran a bit) and they wanted confirmation for their records. He had never had a RAST done before that either. They won't test anything you don't ask for, I don't believe, and I have actually asked for tree nuts but Dr. B always talks me out of it...says for now we have to avoid them anyway.
Make sure you find out what meds he needs to stop prior to going and ask about a Rx for something to numb his arms if they are going to do a RAST (I can't remember the real name; we call it "magic creme" b/c he can have a blood test and it doesn't hurt)...get all your questions together b/c in our experience they'll give you as much time as you need...they'll do a very extensive "intake" question session (probably by the NP Pam or Jan) as well.
Melissa
I hope for the best for you and that you have success with the treatment.
