Drawing blood from baby

We're taking my son to be tested for more allergies and most likely the allergist will do a RAST test (blood test) because my son has eczema.

A friend told me today that it is dangerous to draw too much blood from a baby. I remember thinking they took a lot of blood from him the last time they tested him -- it was a whole vial. He weights 20 pounds. Has anyone heard this before?

I've called his pediatrician and am waiting to hear back, but am interested in other experiences.

Thanks,

Tracy

Hi Tracy, My son had the RAST blood test when he was 12 months old. They took a couple of little vials of blood from him. I thought they were taking too much but the tech said it was ok. It was alot harder on me then him. He cried while they did it but was fine as soon as they were done. They might have taken more from him because they tested him for alot of different things. Please let us know what your allergist says at your appointment and also make sure you go to a lab that does kids. Another thing, it took a full week to get the results back. Good luck.

Tracy,

Is this his second blood test? I saw a user Tracy who said her son scored a 5 out of 6 on the RAST test under the thread Blood test. Is this you? And if it is, are you taking a different kind of blood test this time?

Yes, same Tracy. My son scored a 5 out of 6. We didn't like our first allergist, so we're going to another one. The first allergist did a RAST test, but didn't check for other nuts and other foods. Just amazes me because it's pretty traumatic for a 13 month old to get blood drawn. The new allergist is testing for everything, that's why we're doing this again. We told him to go ahead and check the peanut allergy again while he was at it.

Tracy,

Thanks for the advice. We are going to meet the allergist next week. I would like to compare answers under the 'ask the allergist' section after my appointment next week.

Carol,

Hi.... yes I would like to compare answers to regarding our visit to our allergist yesterday (in another subject thread). I don't have time right now to type it up, but will hopefully do that sometime this weekend.
