pDo you carry wet wipes with you when you're going out with your PA child and know that you'll be going to a fast food place, restaurant, anywhere OUT? I know that this is a "comfort zone" question and I do hope that people feel comfortable answering it./p
pAnd, of course, as always, I'll tell you why I'm asking./p
pWhen we lived in Stayner, I never carried wipes with me when we were out because I knew the places we were going were as safe as they could be. The donut shop that we frequented was peanut free (I now realize that someone could have had peanut residue on their hands regardless of that, who had eaten at our table previously). There was one restaurant that we felt comfortable going into. It was fairly isolated./p
pThis question has just popped into my head after living here for almost ten months. It is such a much bigger place and there are a lot more things to do and see if you're out there./p
pLast week, I had to take the kids to work with me at the retro/antique warehouse and I made sure I packed the wipes (I had bought them a month previously after we attended a sidewalk sale thing that involved cotton candy, otherwise I wouldn't even have had them). But I thought, okay, I'll make sure I wipe down whatever table we're eating on and wipe the kids down well afterward as well (now wiping the kids down afterward had nothing to do with PA, but me wanting to do it quickly since I was at work). So, I did that./p
pTo-day, we went to McDonald's which we don't do very often. I didn't bring the wipes with me and yet questioned in my head if it is something that I *should* be doing./p
pJesse has never had a reaction to residue, but, of course, that doesn't mean that he won't have one because of it./p
pWhen my best friend came to visit, I noticed that when she ate at a restaurant, she did wipe down all of the surfaces before the kids sat down./p
pOh, and when we went to Dairy Queen on which I am sure will be our last occasion, my DH asked one of the staff if he could wipe down the table before we sat down because Dairy Queen is so peanut laden./p
pSo, I'm wondering if I should start to carry the wipes with me?/p
pI also have to take into consideration Jesse's anxiety re his PA right now and question if it would be a good time for me to tighten up my comfort zone (which it would be, obviously) and with something that would be so clear to him that I was doing differently, when he is already spinning out about his PA./p
pI'm just wondering what other PA parents/people do and if you think I should consider changing my comfort zone re this at this time or later or at all./p
pMany thanks and best wishes! /p

When my youngest was still in diapers we had them with us all the time, of course, but now we don't carry them around everywhere. I do keep some in the car, though.
I never wiped down everything, even when I did carry the wipes everywhere. The occasional not-so-clean table, yes, but not everywhere.
I ALWAYS wipe the table and the chair he is sitting in off with a wipe.
I never wipe down anything.
I used to wipe some tables in fast food type places/food courts when the kids were younger and I had the wipes in my bag anyway. I don't carry them anymore ( except for a couple of little hand wipes for messes). I haven't wiped down a table in ages.
After reading some of the posts in the travel section regarding airlines, I would definitely take them on a flight and wipe down the arm rests, etc.

We always carry wipes. I like the antibacterial kind in the pop up cylinder container. My son got hives across the bottom of his thighs from a grocery cart seat. I now wipe down grocery cart seats and handles, high chairs at McDonalds, Wendy's, and the table where he is sitting. We carry a tiny LLBean tote that holds his 2 epipens, Benedryl, wipes, snacks, and a book or a toy. It goes everywhere with us, and is not too big or too small. If people think I'm being too weird with the wiping thing, that's their problem. It probably helps keep a cold or two at bay as well. You do what you have to do to feel comfortable and stay safe.
I've always carried antibacterial wipes and it has nothing to do with PA. I wipe the kids' hands after they've been in the library or grocery store or some other public place - as another poster says, it probably helps prevent a cold or two, same as good old handwashing does.
If PB is on a surface somewhere, at least I'm wiping it off Cayley's hands before she touches her mouth or eyes. I buy lemon-scented ones and the kids *ask* for me to give them one to wipe with - they smell good! And no, I'm not a germ freak, but raw meat residue at grocery stores and sneezed-on library books merit wipes.

I forgot to add that I do carry the small bottle of anti-bacterial hand wash in my purse - for trips to the grocery store/library (Cayley's Mom - I always seem to pick the *leaky meats/poultry*!)
It was handy for the times they'd play in those dreaded ball rooms (at McDonalds, Ikea, etc). I could get them to use it as soon as they were out. We've since stopped letting them go into the ball rooms, because they always, always, always seemed to get sick a couple days after playing in one, despite the big wipedown afterwards.
I think I'm going to put a travel pack of wipes in my purse again - they do seem more convenient. ...mae
Everyone, thank-you for your answers! They were greatly appreciated. I was pleased to see that I wasn't the only person that hadn't been wiping things down. To the person who posted above that they don't wipe things down and if someone didn't like it, too bad (sorta, not their exact wording), that's what YOUR comfort zone is and NONE of us have the right to question it. That's why I had said in my original post that this was obviously a comfort zone question and I was hoping that people would answer regardless and also so that no one will get judged for how they do things differently.
Now, my other question would still remain. If I feel the need now to carry wipes with me (which I kinda am feeling), is it the right time for me, with Jesse's anxiety at it's peak, to start doing something different with our comfort zone? Or would that give him something more to be anxious about? Obviously we have lived safely without reaction (including them playing in the dreaded ball area at McDonald's yesterday) for 5 years so is it necessary for me at this time?
Many thanks and best wishes!

Does anyone know for sure that the wipes remove peanut residue? (Although I suppose that wiping down the table would be better than doing nothing.)
I recently contacted Purell about their hand santizer. They said that their product kills germs but would not necessarily get rid of peanut residue.
I've posted this several times before. IMO, the wipes (and in this case, the Purell) just smear the residue around, not wash it off. I think using wipes is better than nothing, but I don't think they do the job. Again, JMO.
