e-mom:
yes...i am only diabetic in pregnancy...thank goodness. but i do have a higher chance of getting it again later in life if i don't watch my weight and habits. my blood sugar levels were uncontrollable at times. i took insulin several times a day and had to check my sugar at least 5 times, if i recall correctly. i think it was probably more problematic for the babies i was carrying than it was to my health. i had the biggest problems when i would take my insulin and then the older kids would eat half my breakfast or something. haha! then my sugar would plummet to unbelieveable lows. also...i would inject the insulin before eating at a restaurant but if the service was very, very slow the insulin would take effect long before my food actually arrived...makes a person very sick. i think gestational diabetes is the same as other types except that you have the good fortune to be able to be free from it immediately after delivering. a new baby will have potential problems from a diabetic mother too. two of my kids had to be delivered three weeks early due to size and the fact that many babies of diabetics die for unknown reasons at the end of a pregnancy. they weighed 8 lb 10 oz a full three weeks early. but boy were they beautiful! it was like having a four month old the very first moment. none of that scrawny red baby stuff! haha. having been through diabetes i would admit i'd rather have it than many other medical problems but i do have a great deal of respect for those who deal with it on a regular basis...especially children. peanuts certainly restrict my children but i can't imagine being a child having to adhere to a diabetic diet. it's a lot of work even for an adult. but..like i said...it wasn't the end of the world. just one of those things you figure out how to handle and then do it.
