ACT NOW. Contact your State Representative and State Senator if you want
Massachusetts to continue the state funding that has enabled every school to
have a school nurse. They need to know that the voters in their district
want this!

The Asthma & Allergy Foundation of America/New England Chapter has long
supported a school nurse for every school because asthma is the most
widespread chronic disease in the schools and 3% of kids have
life-threatening allergies to foods and beestings. We know these kids need a
school nurse to help make their school experience safer.

We e-mailed you in early March when the Governor's budget proposed
eliminating all state funding for school nurses.

The story now is this: the state House of Representatives' Ways and Means
Committee has just proposed their version of a budget and they have included
$14 million in state funding for school nurses (who were previously funded at
$21 million).

In the next week or two, this budget has to be voted on by the full House of
Representatives, which could approve, decrease, or increase this amount back
up to "level funding" at $21 million. This is the time to call or e-mail
your state representative and ask him/her to "level fund" school nurses on
House Budget Line Item 4590-0250- or at lease approve the $14 million now in
this line.

The next step will be for the State Senate to propose and vote on their
variation of a state budget.
(This is also the time to call or e-mail your State Senator and ask him/her
to "level fund" school nurses at $21 million.)

After that the Governor will have a chance to accept or reject the
legislature's proposed budget. If he vetoes it, the legislator will need a
2/3 majority if they want to override the Governor's veto.

To call your state Representative, you can dial 1-617-722-2800 and ask for
him/her by giving his/her name or by noting where you live.

To call your State Senator, dial 1-617-722-2000, and ask by his/her name or
where you live.

To further clarify, some local communities are voting to pay through property
taxes for school nursing positions that would have been eliminated by the
Governor's budget. But numerous communities are unable to do this - even
though they recognize that school nurses are crucial.

This may all sound a bit complicated. But this is how YOUR sate government
works - and this is your opportunity to be heard if you are concerned about
having a school nurse in every school.
