I was told by another mom an another board that she does not drink any coffee due to the fear of cross contamination. This seemed a little out there to me... but I am new to all of this. Do any of you worry about coffee? I drink instant (yuck-I know) because I only have one cup every day. It's Nescafe or used to be Taster's Choice. I have never had an issue but now this woman has me scared.

What are your thoughts on coffee? I don't want to lose EVERY pleasure in life, you know? This seems extreme...

I live on coffee. [img][/img] I drink instant, and on weekends make a pot.
I also drink coffee from coffee shops, usually Tim Horton's. They have a sign regarding cross contamination, but my feeling is they shouldn't be sticking their fingers in the cup anyway.
Many years ago, I did contact a company regarding their flavoured coffee and felt OK about drinking one of them -- don't remember the brand or flavour though.
At a coffee shop, I was concerned once about a hazelnut flavoured coffee so I spoke to a woman working there. She said it was an artificial flavour, and the way they made it at that particular shop was pour coffee from the carafe into a cup, take a spoon and add in the flavour and stir. The spoon used in the sugar was never near the flavour, so I felt OK about drinking the regular coffee there.

I've called about a few different varieties of flavored coffees over the years to see if they're flavored with nuts or if they're flavored artificially.
Dunkin Donuts told me that their hazelnut and almond flavorings were both entirely artificial. Green Mountain Coffee Roasters hazelnut coffee is artificially flavored, but their Rain Forest Nut variety has real chopped up nuts in it.
Not a coffee exactly, but Coffee Mate's nut-flavored varieties are flavored artificially. (They actually have this info on the recording you get when you call the manufacturer's toll-free number.)

You're talking to the A#1 coffee-holic here!
I too have also found that primarily the nut-flavored coffees are artificial. Beware though, b/c we all get different answers from Starbucks. I've been told the toffee-nut is artificial, while the almond and hazelnut are partly naturally flavored.
I don't drink flavored coffees though --- as in --- flavored beans. Can't stand them, it's just not right!
I drink mochas (with chocolate) and vanilla and caramel drinks if in the mood --- but I check to read the label of the added ingredients.
Else --- I usually buy whole beans (Green Mountain, Tully's, Starbucks, any Trader Joes variety, local roasters, Pete's, Jeremiahs) and have never ever had a problem.
That being said - just be careful in coffee shops. If there is an unsafe syrup AND it is their method of operation to stir with one of those spoons that comes from a standing cup of water with other spoons...then it could be cross-contaminated.
I always say "no stirring" or "clean and sanitized spoon" and explain. Starbucks IS NOT supposed to to use spoons to stir drinks. However, the training doesn't always stick. Plus for me...I can taste even a cross-x of hazelnut flavor --- can't stand it! Whether it's artificial or not I DO NOT want it in my drink. Recently, the Starbucks I frequent (who knows me) got some new baristas and they were stirring my mocha with a spoon, instead of...pouring in the espresso and swirling BEFORE adding soy milk and ice. I was like, "umm...that's not procedure. You need to remake my drink and here is why." The manager heard, and then proceeded to lecture the barista. Matter of fact, they DON'T use common stirring spoons between drinks b/c of altering flavors AND for allergies (they are aware of milk allergies).
Anyhoot - when I doubt, do without (or ask)

I use the cheapie folgers and maxwell house. they are both just coffee so i feel safe about letting my son dip cookies in them on occasion!! we love that!

DH uses folgers. I've called and was told that any flavors they have (hazelnut, etc) are artificial. DD is not allergic to hazelnut anyway but we still avoid it. He only uses Borden creamer.
eta: DH only drinks a cup or two a day also. He used to drink instant, and then I got a free folger's home cafe coffee pod machine which makes one cup at a time. It finally broke but dh was not happy about going back to instant. A couple of years ago for father's day, we bought him a new Melitta one :one coffee machine which makes one cup at a time and he loves it. We use the folger's pods in it.

We go thru alot of Folgers here. I think Paul Newman's coffee at one point had a label stating it did not contain nuts, but then our local grocery store stopped carrying it, so can't confirm if it is still that way.
One word of caution. I did get some gourment beans from a local coffee house/gift shop sort of place, right before we found out about dd's PA. Imagine my horror when I opened it up shortly afterwards and found out my "Texas Pecan" coffee beans had whole pecans in them. Wouldn't have bought them after the fact anyways, but I had no idea whole nuts would be in coffee beans.

I drink way too much coffee each day and I have only ever had one problem and it was mild. Part of my success is probably due to my snobbishness about coffee, I like small, non-chain coffee shops, these places are really open about what they do and are usually willing to help. I frequent a small coffee shop that has two grinders: one for flavored and one for regular beans. I asked about it the first time I went in and they were happy to tell me. I also buy whole roasted beans for home and I grind them myself. My only bad experience was from a co-op grocery store which had two grinders, one of which was clearly labeled only for non-flavored coffee beans. I ground my coffees beans in that grinder and after about two weeks of drinking this coffee I had a rash on the center of my chest. I quickly deduced that it could be the coffee beans being cross-contaminated and in the spirit of science I stopped drinking coffee made from those beans. Rash went away and I bought my own grinder.
For my level of allergies (severe PN & TNA)I think it would take a huge amount of cross-contamination in coffee to kill me, but it doesn't take much to make things uncomfortable.

I use folgers and maxwell house. used gevalia before too. i use the plain kind and called on them. gevalia said it mite be better to steer clear of the flavored ones.
