Has anyone know of an allergic reaction to citrinella candles? My son had what we think was a system wide allergy attack on Sunday. The cause is a mystery, but I'm wondering if the smell from the candles could've caused it. WE had a party the night before and there was still a strong smell Sunday, plus some even spilled on the grass. See my post on Aug. 4th for the details in his reaction. I was just getting comfortable about his allergies just to have this bring up my anxiety level high again.

I'm allergic to citronella oil. I can't touch the plant itself, nor the essential oil. And citronella candles make me pretty sick. I get hives, itchy lips/throat, asthma attacks, and migraines. A couple times, when I couldn't escape the smoke, my throat started getting really tight.

i would agree that an allergic reaction to citronella is very possible--my rule of thumb is, if you're sensitive enough to have some of the more standard food and respiratory allergies, there might be some less common allergies that show up now and again. (i don't know if i'm truly allergic to citronella, but i do know that the candle smell/smoke gives me a ripping headache.)
anyway, don't let this bring your anxiety level up any further. sounds like you're doing all the right things and asking all the right questions. when i was a kid, i reacted to seemingly everything, but the good news is that i grew out of most it. just keep doing what you're doing. and buy stock in the benadryl company. :-)

One of my son's worst asthma attacks was caused by a citronella candle. He was in the hospital for three days because of it. They were celebrating his birthday at school and part of the celebration was to walk with the candle around the "sun" once for each year. Well, moments later he was struggling to breath. Sorry to hear your son also had a reaction...
