I was pleasantly surprised to find so many allergy charts easily available. Here is my question, if there is a restaurant that lists everything and there are safe foods he can eat but other items that contain or may contain peanuts/tree nuts, it's ok to eat there right? just wipe down where he'll be sitting but as long as we order him a safe item it's ok? of course we all have to order safe items too though.
I'm pretty sad that pizza hut has a "may contain" allergen on their pizza and pasta sauces so it's impossible to eat there.

Be sure to let them know-in fact it might be best to ask for the manager or chef. That way they can make sure they don't cross contaminate any of the food.
I use the web site info as a starting point - whenever possible I try to call the manager before we eat there and narrow down what might be safe for him. Some restuarants that list say only one or two nut items probably would get my bus before ones that have one safe meal my son can eat. I figure that alone cuts down on the poss of cross contam and you don't have to rely so much on someone not making a mistake. However we do have a couple of exceptions where they do have many possiblities for cross contam but we still eat there - one would be a fish place where he eats only steamed crab baked potato and applesauce - we just learned that we should ask that they use a clean tong to grab the potato
Oh and I should say I do trust big big fast food places like mc donalds - with out calling ahead etc. To be doing what is listed on their web site etc.
Just what works for us,
I have been calling managers at restaurants that we go to very often and most have been very helpful, understanding and even sympathetic.
I'm still working on my own comfort zone so just a couple of more questions. If it's a restaurant that doesn't serve anything safe, would you still go and bring your own food?
IME most restaurants won't allow you to bring in your own meal.
syrupg, if the restaurant doesn't serve anything that is safe I would not eat there at all, with or without my own food. The chances of cross contamination would be too high in my opinion. I know everyone lives with pa differently I just avoid eating pn/tn as well.
Thanks,
yeah that's what I thought. Not a problem, there are plenty of restaurants that have been helpful and we can still go to.
