I just got off the phone with Brach's regarding their Milk Maid Caramels. I was hoping that this may be one thing that my child might be able to eat. On the label there is no allergy warning and I was hoping that maybe they were produced on a dedicated line or maybe even in a plant that does not contain their typical chocolate/nut products. I was informed, however, that the risk of cross contamination is extremely high -that "there are peanuts all over that place" and that they label only what they are obligated to by law and they have chosen not to place any warning on the product. (It also contains Lecithin which I understand is a food additive which may contain peanuts.) This confirms things for me that I need to continue making those calls to manufacturers.

Jenna,
Thanks for the eye-opening post! Yikes! I can't believe they admit that there are 'peanuts all over the place' but won't label it. I have never been good about calling manufacturers, but this makes me want to! No Brachs for us!

And on that note, does anyone have a recipe for making them at home? Or for making caramel apples, which I'd like to try this year?

I actually have a recipe for homemade caramels as soon as I can find it I will post it. It's probably a good time to start getting some information or recipes for Halloween and the holidays coming up. I don't about all of you but I'd like to get any information on safe candy the earlier the better.

I bought these Milk Maids before checking here and I called. They said they are now made in a nut-free facility. You may want to call yourself though! We are having candy apples tonight!!

Hershey's has *yummy* caramels called 'Classic Caramels' (or something like that. They are (IMO) *way* better than Milk Maid or any of the normal cube shaped ones. And Hershey's seems pretty allergy aware so I am happy to buy their products when I can.
