I posted this a week ago on the Main Discussion Board, but I wanted to ask here, too

My Cap Rast came back totally negative for peanut. I have only had three "reactions," one time my throat itched a little after eating PB, one time my hand itched after I touched it, and I "think" I felt weird after eating something fried in peanut oil a while back.

Now, the allergist told me the next step is an oral challenge, but I want to wait until my baby is born. I'm five months pregnant and don't really want to have to worry about a reaction while pregnant if I don't have to. He said to avoid "obvious" peanuts until then, but not to worry about Made in Facility, stuff like that.

What do you all think? I know Cap Rast can be false positive, what about false negative? It is supposedly as accurate as a skin prick. My "allergy" developed while I was pregnant the first time, could it be gone now that I am pregnant again? This is just so weird...

I have heard that hormones play a part in adult onset FA.
Strange things happen when a woman is pregnant - I think anything is possible.
If it were me - I would wait until baby is born - then have another RAST done. If it is negative, then I would ask for a challenge.

I would wait - would not need the extra worries while pregnant.
Have a blessed day,

Ditto waiting.
Dont play around with a baby on board. Avoid 'contains peanuts', avoid 'may contains...' if you want (JMHO).
Be careful though.
And once baby is born, IOFC may be necessary.
Good luck!

For what it's worth - one of my sons RAST tests show negative as well - but his skin tests show WAY positive, and he has minor reactions when he has been exposed to peanut - hence the testing.
I wouldn't do any more testing or exposures while pregnant. Then I'd do more testing before I actually ate a peanut - especially if you are nursing.

That's exactly the kind of info I was looking for. Like if a RAST is negative, but someone could still be allergic.
But you say your son is mildly allergic. So I guess that could be true in my case, as well? Not enough to show on RAST? Was your son's RAST a CAP RAST? Because those are supposed to be as accurate as skin testing. I did not want to do skin because of the baby right now.
I will nurse (still am nursing my 18 month old,) so I guess I won't really do the challenge for quite a while. In the meantime, I think I will continue as I have done, but maybe hopefully not be so worried about it.

I wonder how much pregnancy can affect the IgE (did I get that right?) levels in your blood - and in effect the test - and even your allergy. I would act as if I was allergic (not just a little) until after your baby is born and then I would re-test. I think I would wait at least three months to have the test. That's just what *I* would do.
Good luck.

Yes, but if the IGE levels are affected by the pregnancy, then the allergy/reaction would be affected, also, correct?
I do know that the immune system is suppressed in pregnancy to protect the fetus from rejection from the body, so I suppose that could apply to allergies, too.

My PA DS#1's (4y) allergist told me at my last pregnancy to completely avoid peanuts and peanut products, especially in the latter months of pregnancy. She also indicated that I was to do the same avoidance if I chose to breastfeed (which I did). I now have a 18m son that is not allergic to anything at this time (don't know about the peanuts--never had any and not going to until he's at least 3yrs). We don't have any other food allergies in our family. I wasn't about to take any chances in the event I was to blame for DS#1's PA.
I never hurts to be cautious. I would suggest complete avoidance until your baby is born and/or weaned (if you planned on nursing).

Oh, yes, I know to avoid peanuts anyway in pregnancy and while nursing. I nursed my ds until last week (he is 19 months) and plan to nurse this baby till at least two (that's if I don't get pregnant again-- the only reason I stopped this time was that at 6 months, I was getting contractions)
I was just curious about the test results. I WANT to trust them so that I don't have to be so vigilant. I just didn't know if anyone knew of false negatives in CapRasts.
Thanks, though!
