pI am new to the whole food allergy (peanut, nuts, fish, egg allergies). My 19 month old son was diagnosed by a prick skin test on Apr. 29 02. I have read conflicting info. on the cap rast test which I believe to a blood test. Someone was taking their child to see Dr. Sampson at Mt. Sinai b/c they had a neg cap rast and still had a reaction. Can some please explain the diff or confirm the diff in the test. My allergist told me that the skin test was a better diagnostic tool then the blood work for a diagnosis./p

We are having a similar problem but my son is much older --he is 14 years old. His skin test (though it was taken 2-3 years ago) was 5+ and his RAST test (not cap rast unfortunately) was negative (.05). My son did not have lifethreatening reactions--his chest gets tight and he gets a stomachache. We are waiting to hear from the pedi to see what to do next. I think they want to do another skin test and we want them to do a food challenge so they can evaluate his symptoms. He has an epipen just because he was going away to scout camp this week. If he is truly positive then we want him to have one all the time. Look forward to seeing what you find out.

By the way Tanya, what kind of reactions has your son had? Thanks. Terri

I am also new to PAs and other food allergies. My 13 month old son is PA and just had, what I believed to be the RAST test today. You mentioned a cap rast test? What is the difference? I have few books that I picked up but I don't seen any references to cap rast.
